Working for Dr. Mahon was a privilege.  He cared deeply for his people.  He was the best thing that ever happened to Saint Joseph Medical Center. I shall miss his wisdom and humor.

Uncle Bob to me.... Big Brother and Father-figure for my dad!  Many fond memories start with a laugh- oh what a comedian and light of the party.. also a light in The Mahon Family!  Spending time with you always left me feeling happy and loved!  You are fondly known as Uncle Bob The Milkshake Man to my daughters because you had them under your spell at a family reunion, promised them milkshakes and then returned with them to the delight of my girls!  My extra- special memory is the letter you sent me before I left for The University of MD!  When dad was having open heart surgery you sat and entertained our gang and made us all feel safe!  Love you dearly for all that you were to this family and to your community as a doctor!  ❤️❤️❤️

I first met Dr. Mahon when I was a medical student working at Mercy Hospital in 1965 and a continued to be one of his students when I worked there as an intern and medical resident. He was a mentor and a role model. He gave me encouragement and support when I needed it. Whatever success that I have had over the years I owe to him and others who taught me. 

A lot of years have gone by but I still recall some of his patients and what he taught me. He obviously to me loved taking care of his patients and also teaching. I will never forget and always be grateful to Dr. Mahon! His family should be proud of all his accomplishments and especially of the impact he had on me and many other doctors over the years.

Stories? Stories? There are a million Bob Mahon stories.  Most of them he has probably told us at least twice & still laughed every time he did.
My stories only go back to 1985.  Sister Marie Cecilia, our Boss, caught lightning in a bottle when she assembled a team that was made up of a cast of characters led by Dr. Mahon (he’ll always be Dr Mahon to me).  Her mandate to us was that the patients and employees came first.  She would be our buffer with HQ and she ‘cut us loose’.  During the 80’s and 90’s he was able to take a community hospital and turn it into a Regional Medical Center with national & international patient base.  He grew programs such as the 1st non-university Open Heart Surgery program, Retina Center, Spine Center, MISTI, and more.  This occurred even with two PR bumps in the road that only served to stiffen his resolve.  As a matter of fact, I think there was only one thing he feared.  That was Ann.  That fear was confirmed when he came to work one day with a bright pink tie.  He said “Don’t say a word, Ann bought it for me and told me to wear it or else.”.  True love & respect.  He has said to me many time privately and at least once publicly (at the Healing Hands ceremony at St. Joe)-“Marrying Ann was the best decision I ever made.”  Wow, I hope my wife says something like that after 50 years.
He will always be Dr. Mahon to me, he will always be my friend and mentor, he will always be remembered by me as the gentle physician and friend that broke the diagnosis of my father’s cancer to me with the knowledge that he could then say “… let him enjoy the holidays and we’ll do everything to make him comfortable in January.  That was more than 25 years ago this week—I’m really starting to not like November.
	I know I speak for the entire executive team from those great days when I say, Thank you Sister for putting us together with you and Dr. Mahon, for being part of something bigger than ourselves & having the years we did with him.

I loved Uncle Bobby. He was a great family man and a terrific Uncle .  I remember a time when he bought a new station wagon and he came down to our house to show my Mom and Dad and us Children. Mom and Dad could not go because of her illness. So we all piled in for a ride. He said close all the windows because the car had air condioner. We thought we were in Heaven because we never had that. We where on our way when it started to get hot in the car. Then he said Ha Ha I fooled you kids!!! That he did not have air condition at all. 
We laughed. He always was a funny guy.

My sincere sympathies to Ann and all of Bob's loving family. I first met Bob in 1987 when I joined Franciscan Health System and Bob was the Vice President of Medical Affairs at St. Joseph Medical Center in Towson. We had recently formed PPIC (a physician's insurance company) and Bob was recruited to serve on the Board. Since I lived in the Baltimore area, Bob and I would routinely travel together to BWI to fly to attend Board Meetings in Omaha or Chicago or Cincinnati or wherever. When we did go to Cincinnati, I made it a habit of stopping at Hot Bagels to bring home some of the best everything bagels ever. Bob was always the gentleman and offered to carry the bags on the flights despite the strong aroma of  garlic. I think Bob worried many times that my driving to BWI was going to be the death of us both. But we survived and he made great contributions to PPIC. He was a special man and a caring physician.
