Paul Thomas Baker, FBI special agent, dies
He had later been a private investigator

Paul Thomas Baker, a retired FBI special agent who later became a private investigator, died Jan. 1 of pneumonia at Greater Baltimore Medical Center. He was 85.Mr. Baker, the son of a letter carrier and a homemaker, was born in Baltimore and raised in Irvington.After graduating from Mount St. Joseph High School in 1943, he enlisted in the Navy, where he served in the Pacific as a pharmacist technician and later as personal secretary to Rear Adm. Charles M. Oman of the Navy Medical Corps.
After the war, Mr. Baker returned to Baltimore and attended the University of Maryland, College Park from 1946 to 1949.
While working at Baltimore Gas & Electric Co., he attended evening classes at the University of Baltimore from 1949 to 1953, where he earned his law degree.In 1953, Mr. Baker joined the FBI and served as a special agent at field offices in Albuquerque, N.M., Chicago, New York City and Baltimore before retiring in 1980.During his FBI years in Baltimore, Mr. Baker enjoyed playing Santa Claus for preschoolers and at area churches.From 1981 until 2001, Mr. Baker worked as a private investigator.The longtime Timonium resident was a past president of Maryland Law Enforcement Officers Inc. and unsuccessfully ran for Baltimore County sheriff in 1986.During the administration of Gov. William Donald Schaefer, he served as a District Court commissioner in Towson and as a member of the Governor's Executive Advisory Council.He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9083 and American Legion Post 183.
Mr. Baker was an avid golfer and had been a life member of the Maryland Police and Fire Golf Association. He was also a former president of Pine Ridge Senior Men's Golf Club.
He was a communicant of Nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ Roman Catholic Church and the church's men's club.
Surviving are his wife of 52 years, the former Dorothy Gill; a daughter, Suzanne B. Fuller of Timonium; a brother, Robert K. Baker of Austin, Texas; and two grandchildren.
