Joseph Anthony Mead, Jr., MD, Consultant, Medical Affairs, Mercy Medical Center, retired Professor of Medicine of the University of Maryland School of Medicine, and retired Vice President for Medical Affairs at Mercy Medical Center, has died surrounded by his children and friends at Stella Maris Hospice on March 8, 2016 from complications of a stroke. He was 83.
Dr. Mead was born July 8, 1932 to Joseph A. Mead, Sr., and Anna Mead nee Neary of Baltimore, MD, oldest of five boys. Joe, as he preferred to be called, graduated cum laude from Loyola College of Baltimore in 1954. He received his MD degree from the University School of Medicine in 1958 and interned at Mercy Hospital from 1958-1959. Dr. Mead began his Residency at Mercy Hospital and achieved the position of Chief Resident at Mercy by1961. He later served as Clinical Fellow for the Arthritis Foundation in 1966.
Dr. Mead joined the Army in 1962, and served as Captain, Internal Medicine Ward Physician at Kimbrough Army Hospital, Ft. Meade, MD. He became Assistant Chief, Department of Medicine in 1964, and was promoted to Chief of Cardiology also at this time. Dr. Mead left military service in 1965 to pursue private practice and begin a long career of academic achievement. In 1965, he began as an Instructor at the University Of Maryland School Of Dentistry and became an Associate Professor at the age of 36. At the same time, he became an Associate for the University Of Maryland School Of Medicine. In 1967, he became an Assistant Professor and by 1974 was appointed full Clinical Professor of Medicine.
Dr. Mead’s major teaching positions were Director of Intern Training (Mercy Hospital, 1964-1971), Acting Chief, Department of Medicine (Mercy Hospital, 1970-1971), Chief, Department of Medicine (Mercy Hospital, 1971-1975), Director of Medicine (Peninsula General Hospital, Salisbury, MD, 1975-1977) and Vice President, Medical Affairs (Mercy Medical Center, 1977- 1995). From 1965 to 1967, Dr. Mead also served as Associate Chief of Medicine for North Arundel Hospital in Glen Bernie, MD, and Consultant for the Veterans Administration Hospital in Baltimore, MD.
Professionally, Dr. Mead was a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, the Baltimore City Medical Society, and the Medical and Chirurgical Faculty of Maryland.
Dr. Mead’s honors and awards included the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society, the Maryland Hospital Association Distinguished Service Award (1988), the Child Advocacy Network Public Service Award (1991), and the Knight of Magistral Grace, Sovereign Military Order of Malta Federal Association USA (1992).
Dr. Mead was a major consultant for and member of many medical-related associations and committees, such as the Medical and Chirurgical Faculty of Maryland (Committee on Advertising Guidelines and Committee on Continuing Medical Education); Chairman, Standards Committee for the Maryland Foundation for Health Care; the Maryland Hospital Association (Chairman, Committee on Professional Practices, 1975-1976, the Rate Council); the Legislation Committee (Representative for Consortium of Catholic Healthcare Facilities); Practice Protocols Committee (Chairman, 1996), Medicaid Steering Committee, Consumer Protection committee (1984-1986); Chairman, Graduate Medical Education Committee (1995); Baltimore City-- Professional Standards Review Organization: Associate Medical Director for Quality Care (1974-1975), Acting Medical Director (1975); American Hospital Chairman, HMO Practice Parameters and Quality Committee Maryland Health Care Access and Cost Commission (1993-1994); Healthcare for the Homeless Board of Directors (2000-2001; Chairman, Baltimore Commission on Aging and Retirement Education (2000-present).
Dr. Mead helped found the Mercy Southern Family Health Center, providing health care to the people of South Baltimore who previously had little access to it.
In addition, Dr. Mead was a previous Chairman of the Archdiocesan Commission on Aging. For the Wyman Park Health System Baltimore Board of Trustees, he was on the Medical Affairs/Quality Assurance Committee and the Finance and Audit Committee (1982-1988). From 1977-1984, Dr. Mead on the Maryland High Blood Pressure Commission. In 1989, he was on the Healthcare for the Homeless Long Range Planning Committee. From 1990 to present, he was on the Board of Directors for the Child Advocacy Network. In 1990 -2003, he was a member of the Board of Trustees for the Jenkins Memorial (Catholic Charities). In 1993, he was Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Jenkins Memorial.
For the University of Maryland School of Medicine, his contributions included membership on the Committee on Admissions and the Continuing Medical Education Committee Editorial Board.
Dr. Mead was the loving husband of the late Patricia R. Mead and Adele J. Mead; beloved father of Joseph S. Mead, Andrew M. Mead, Patricia M. Deros, Joh’Anna M. Sherman, Timothy S. Mead, Matthew J. Mead and Jonathan P. Mead; dear brother of Robert, William, Michael and the late James Mead; cherished grandfather of Ashley Whitley, Ana Deros, John Deros, Jaime Flynn, Michelle Sherman, Shaun Mead, Shane Mead, Tyler Mead, Nina Mead, Zachary Mead, Logan Mead, Gabriella Mead, Alex Mead and Lilyana Fulkerson.
The family will receive friends at the Lemmon Funeral Home of Dulaney Valley, Inc., 10 W. Padonia Road (at York Road) Timonium, Maryland 21093 on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9PM. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at the Chapel of Stella Maris, 2300 Dulaney Valley Road Timonium, MD 21093 on Thursday, March 10, 2016 at 11AM. Interment Private.
