Jane Wilhelm Daniels died peacefully at home on Thursday, January 2, 2025 at the age of 96. A lifelong Baltimorean, she was born on July 25, 1928 to Ann Elizabeth Wilhelm (nee Dawson) and Frank Osborne Wilhelm. She attended Roland Park Country School (1946) and earned a BA in English from Goucher College (1950). After completing a Masters of Library Science from Simmons College in Boston she worked at the Enoch Pratt Free Library in various branches until the early 1960’s. An avid Anglophile, she arranged a job swap with a librarian from England and spent 1954-1955 working in Croydon outside London where she made life-long friends.
She married Worth Bagley Daniels Jr. in June 1962; daughters Jane Desvarreux January Daniels and Ann Osborne Daniels came along soon after.
A life-long lover of textiles, Jane became a weaver and a member of the Weavers Guild of Greater Baltimore (WGGB), and served on the Advisory Council of the Textile Museum in Washington, DC. In addition, she served on the boards of Roland Park Country School, Enoch Pratt Free Library, and Baltimore Shakespeare Company, and was a founding member of the Baltimore Women’s Giving Circle.
She and Worth traveled the world and Jane loved the more exotic and less traveled places – Turkey, China and the Silk Road. She loved and collected brass, Chinese dragons, and textiles during their journeys.
Jane is survived by her sister, Mary Virginia Barton, daughters Jane and Ann Daniels, son-in-law Eric Kalbfleisch, granddaughters Annie Calhoun, Grace Calhoun and Josephine Kalbfleisch, nephew Leigh Daniels and his wife Carolyn Hastings, nieces Ginger McKee and her husband Bobby McKee, Ann Brezniak and Charlotte Lord, and grandnieces Molly Gurasich and Sarah Sutton and their families.
As one friend said, “She lived a generous life full of books, art, creativity and dear friendships and loving family.”
A service will be held on Saturday, February 1 at 1pm at St David’s Church at 4700 Roland Ave, Baltimore MD 21210.
Donations may be made in Jane's honor to the Weavers Guild of Greater Baltimore.
