Gerald Joseph Murphy, Jr., 63, of Cockeysville, left this world peacefully on July 18, 2014 surrounded by his family at home. To clear any confusion, this obituary is meant to honor the man who you probably know better as, “Sonny”, “Mr. Murphy” or just “Murph”.
Born on October 24, 1950, a week shy of his favorite holiday, Sonny was an old soul with a young, rebellious heart. Although no degree bears his name, Sonny was a student of Life and knew everything about anything, as he probably told you on at least one occasion. He was not a world traveler, but he had the spirit of a true adventurer and lived life by his unique rules and code of honor; Loyalty, Honesty and Tradition. A dutiful employee of McCormick & Co. for over 30 years, it is known by many that he could have run the company far better than any CEO of past, present or future, but chose not to do so as it would interfere with his sunbathing and painting. Sonny was a survivor of over a dozen civil war battles.
Sonny is survived by his Bride, Jacki Lee Brandt and their three children Britonius (Bria) and her husband Spencer Sinnott, and Skip (Shane) and Pink (Tim) Murphy. Also survived by his sisters, Saint Geraldine of Parkville and her husband, Mike Davis and Eve and Barry Andrews. He lived long enough to see two beloved grandchildren enter this world, Presley Ann and Owen Murphy and had just enough time to whisper to them all the secrets of the universe. He leaves behind his much-adored nieces and nephews, Noel, Robert, Meagan, Jenna, Matt and Josh. No doubt, his legion of devoted cookie-followers will miss him most of all. Sonny joins his parents Gerald & Gloria Murphy and his baby sister Kathleen in Heaven. Hopefully enough time has passed and he is forgiven for never getting his haircut while on Earth.
The family will receive friends at the LEMMON FUNERAL HOME OF DULANEY VALLEY INC., 10 W. Padonia Road (at York Road) Timonium, MD 21093 on Wednesday, July 23 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9pm.
