On July 28, 2024 George H. Thurbon, Sr. passed away. He is the beloved husband of 67 years to Ida J. Thurbon (nee Lilly); devoted father of Teresa A. Hookey and her husband Stephen, George H. Thurbon, Jr. and his wife Charlene, and Theodore Thurbon; cherished grandfather of Lauren Goldberg (Kevin), Shannon Hookey, Melissa Hookey, and Lauren Thurbon (Brad); great grandfather of Jonathan Schroeder, Everly Goldberg and Asher Goldberg; dear brother of Thelma A. McCann, and Alice “Susie” R. Page; pre-deceased by 4 other siblings and his parents, John and Hattie Thurbon.
He was a kind and hardworking man, known for his sharp wit and comedic spirit that brightened every room he entered. A talented craftsman, he devoted his life to building boats and ships, both professionally and as a beloved hobby. His career with the Maritime Administration saw him participating in Sea Trials for cargo ships, ensuring their optimal performance before they set sail, and he played a crucial role in the activation and preparations of reserve fleet ships for deployment to the Middle East during the first Iraq war. He cherished family gatherings, especially cookouts, and was a regular at Pappas Restaurant, where he was greeted by name each Wednesday. Above all, he was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, whose presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Relatives and friends are invited to gather at the Lemmon Funeral Home of Dulaney Valley, Inc., 10 W. Padonia Road, Timonium, Maryland 21093 on Saturday, August 3, 2024 from 10 AM to 12 PM,
at which time a Celebration of George’s Life will begin.
