Elsie Marie Herbst, age 88, passed away on May 21, 2017. Elsie was known for her hard work and dedication to her family. Elsie was a product of the depression, growing up in a log cabin with no electric or running water and an outhouse. She was the oldest of 9 children. Elsie started working at age 14 and worked tirelessly until her reluctant retirement at age 84.
.
She received a full scholarship to college for fashion design but graduated in Home Design. Her first job was at Rockland Bleach and Dye where she started as a factory floor worker and worked her way up to Assistant to the President. In the late 50s she started the ACER Company that manufactured racing go carts and was one of the very first companies to produce Styrofoam coolers. Her next endeavors were Plastics Design & Specialties and then RKM Printing.
.
When her children were young, she closed these companies to spend more time with them and that’s when she started building houses. She built nine houses with her husband Howard. After selling a few of these houses she decided that she should also be the Realtor. The rest is Real Estate History.
Elsie started with Grempler Realty in the early 70s. In 1978 she sold over 10 million when the average cost of a house was $66,000. Within a few years, Elsie became manager of the office. After acquisition by Long and Foster, Elsie continued to manage and then was promoted to Vice President. Elsie’s accomplishments include: Vice President of Long & Foster Realty, Manager of the year for 2004, Cecil County Realtor of the year for 2004 and 2005, Board President of Cecil County realtors 2004, Director of Cecil County Board and Maryland Association of Realtors. She was the State of Maryland Realtor of the year for 2005. She was awarded the National Association of Realtors Omega Tau Rho Medallion of Service.
Elsie was preceded in death by her husband Howard. Elsie is survived by her son Richard (Michele), daughters Kelly (Len), and Mardy (Mark), her grandchildren Christie Cochoran (Scott), Alex Herbst, Kelsie Cassell, Jimmy Cassell, Alan Irby and Annie Irby and all of her Real Estate family that she loved like her own children.
Due to Elsie’s very private and personal wishes, No Service will be held.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to CurePSP, 30 E. Padonia Road, Timonium, Maryland 21093 or visit www.psp.org.
