Michael Marvin Eugene Matthews, 72, of Tigard, Oregon, passed away on August 10, 2023. He was born on November 29, 1950, in Plant City, Florida, to the late Louis Alvin Matthews and Wilma Jean Hanson Matthews.
Michael was a dedicated family man who always wanted to make others happy. He had a great sense of humor and was known for his funny faces and words that brought laughter to everyone around him. He was hardworking and cherished his family above all else.
In his early years, Michael attended Reedsport High School where he became a three-time state wrestling champion. He later graduated from the University of Oregon with a Bachelor of Science degree. It was during his time at the university that he met his beloved wife, Leslie Anne Matthews, at the school cafeteria. When she asked for seconds, he playfully replied, "No, you can't have seconds!"
During the Vietnam War, Michael served as a Sergeant in the US Marine Corps. His dedication and commitment to his military service were commendable.
After his military service, Michael pursued a career as a self-employed individual. He retired after many years of hard work and dedication.
Outside of his professional life, Michael had a wide range of hobbies and interests. He was a talented songwriter, poet, artist, and singer. He also had a passion for karate, fishing, hunting, and writing. His creativity and diverse range of interests brought joy to his life.
Michael is survived by his loving wife, Leslie Anne Matthews of Tigard, Oregon, his son Brian Matthews, and his daughter Jennifer Woolf. He will be deeply missed by his family and all who knew him.
A ceremony to honor Michael's life will be held on Friday, August 25, 2023, at 9:45 AM at Willamette National Cemetery, located at 11800 SE Mt. Scott Blvd., Portland, OR 97086.
