Maureen Alanna Johnson died on March 24th, 2024, one month shy of her 50th birthday, with her parents Noel and Patricia Hislop at her side. She is also survived by her children, Aidan and Alanna, their father Paul, her sister Irene and nephew Daragh as well as her extended family in the USA and Ireland, and a large circle of devoted friends.
Born in San Leandro, California, Maureen grew up in Portland, Oregon. She relished the city’s thriving culture in the 1990s, skateboarding around with her long, pink hair flowing and enjoying gigs at the Xray Café and Pine Street Theatre. After working as a vet tech for some years, she studied to become a nurse and went on to specialize in hospice care. Maureen was an advocate for animal welfare, and shared her home with a variety of well-loved pets. She enjoyed pottery and leaves behind a wealth of pieces treasured by her heart-broken family. Her loved ones cherished her fabulous sense of humor, which she displayed through her long battle with cancer, her keen wit, her compassion for the underdog and her willingness to speak up. In the last year of her life, Maureen made two of her dreams come true by taking her beloved children on a cruise to Alaska and a vacation in Hawaii.
Maureen’s family is grateful to her many friends for the kindness and practical support they provided throughout her illness.
A memorial service will take place Saturday, May 18th, 2024 at 1:00 P.M. at Young's Funeral Home.
