Despite successful treatment for breast cancer 5 years ago, we learned last month the cancer had spread. A new form of oral chemo proved to be ineffective. She collapsed Saturday morning, was taken to ER, and from there to ICU where she received loving care from all.
In her final hour our precious Jan thanked us for many things and confirmed her love for us. Jan told us not to grieve, because she was content that she had followed diet, medication, and exercise instructions to the best of her ability, and because they had proved unsuccessful, according to God’s will, she was ready to simply pass away in complete peace and acceptance.
Jan asked us to rejoice that she would be safely in the arms of her Lord Jesus. With the humility Jan always exhibited, Jan she said was “good with numbers” and soon she would offer help to God with numbers…and then she laughed at herself, as she admitted she knew God really didn’t need any help, but she was confident He did have a perfect place for her in Heaven. Jan told us “God is my Refuge”. She then went to sleep in perfect peace.
What a privilege and blessing, indeed, an honor, to be Jan’s parents…what an amazing gift from God! We have so many fond memories of Jan. When Jan was 3 years old and during a routine annual physical, the pediatrician told her he was placing a stethoscope on her chest to listen to her heart. During the process Jan asked the doctor, “ Do you hear Jesus in my heart.…what is He saying?”. Doctor replied, “Jesus says He loves you”. Jan beamed that beautiful smile of hers and commented “Oh, that is good”. Throughout her life she confirmed assurance that Jesus was always with her. Surely, she led a God-pleasing life. We marvel at how exemplary she was in being positive and strong in a faith that never wavered.
We are praying now for the grace and strength that only God can give…and as Jan herself said, we welcome and are grateful for your prayers. He has promised He will never forsake us and He will not leave us comfortless.
Special thanks and gratitude to Jan’s dear supportive friends…Margie who was always best friends with Jan from college days through her final days, Yvonne who sat with her through chemo with mentoring which grew into strong, lasting friendship, and Natalie who showered Jan with close friendship and encouragement. Many thanks also to all the many supportive family members, especially Evelyn and Eldbjorg, work colleagues including Remani, and Julee and the very loving Breast Friends Group.
