Born April 8, 1943 in Portland Oregon, the second of 4 children born to Lawrence and Bernice Means. He joined the Navy after graduating from Roosevelt High School. He became a pediatrician in the Navy. Later private practice as a pediatrician and then returning to the Navy completing his career as hospital commanding officer in Memphis Tennessee before retiring to Portland and Coos Bay/Charleston. Jim lived in many places including: Oregon, Hawaii, Spain and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. He loved traveling, racquetball, hosting family and friends, his beach home, gardening, walking and finding change on the ground in Portland. He appeared on a 1960’s Walter Cronkite special on transportation and on a game show with Jacqueline Suzzane (author of Valley of the Dolls). Jim was exceptional in the way that he selflessly gave his concern, time, and resources for the benefit of family and friends. He was beloved by all close to him and will be sorely missed. He is survived by his two brothers Larry William Means (wife Maggie O’Neal) and Michael Lester Means (wife Juanita Means) and his nine nieces and nephews: Maria Soccoro Murigia, Noe Galvez, Teala Galvez, Daniel Galvez, Angela Jolley, Eriks Means, Kristy Adams, Julie Powell and Micheal J Means. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Linda Galvez. His ashes will be interred at the Willamette National Cemetery, in Portland. Jim requested no flowers.
