

Daniel T. Hasuike, age 74, was born on August 14, 1949 in Portland, Oregon to James and Mitsuko (Kawasaki) Hasuike. He passed away quietly on June 29, 2024 after a long illness. He was a fighter, staying positive throughout his illness. He grew up on a farm in Tigard, where as an adult he would provide seasonal help when needed.
He graduated from Tigard High School in 1967. He played sports, excelling in wrestling. He was a team captain and went to the State Tournament his senior year. He continued to wrestle while at Portland State University. Later transferring and graduating from Oregon State University. He went to both Waseda University and Sophia University in Tokyo where he met life-long friends. While in Japan he taught English for 3 years. After his time in Japan, he backpacked across Asia and Europe before his return to Oregon.
He was a loyal and dedicated worker, working full time at Bingham Willamette and part time at Sears. He worked at Bingham Willamette until the company relocated to California, and continued at Sears until it closed in 2019.
He loved to travel. For a number of years he would vacation in Hawaii twice a year visiting his cousin. His travels took him throughout the US, with stops to visit close friends in places such as Alaska, Michigan, Idaho, New Mexico, Vermont and more. A major trip was driving across the US over 6 weeks for 13,500 miles with his cousin, Ken Sunamoto. The trip included many places and sites such as the Kentucky Derby, Graceland, Indy 500, Mt Rushmore, Yellowstone, Louisville, Monticello and Montreal among the many miles that they traveled. A couple of memorable trips to Japan were in 2015 and 2023. In 2015 his trip included visiting his niece in Kyushu and traveling together throughout Honshu. In 2023 with the Oregon Buddhist Temple tour group of which he had fond memories. During that time he was able to visit a long-time friend in Kobe from college days.
After retirement, he enjoyed going to estate sales with his nephew. Adding to his collection of woodworking tools. He liked to be outdoors and would go out and about on the farm. He was always perfecting his picture taking skills. During his travels he could be seen carrying multiple cameras to get that perfect shot. He was kind, generous, well-liked by many and kept his good humor even to the end.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Mitsuko Hasuike and sister Grace Hasuike. He is survived by his brothers Arthur (Suzanne) and Steve, sister Betty (Henry) Young, nephew Nicholas Young, nieces Lisa Hasuike, Kendra and Lauren Young.
A memorial service will be held at 12:30pm, August 25, 2024, at the Oregon Buddhist Temple, 3720 SE 34th Ave, Portland, OR 97202.
