Born and raised on the east side of Portland, his parents, grandmother, and sister Carole, migrated from Wells, Minnesota in 1940. Bruce attended Fernwood Elementary, and Benson Polytechnic High School, graduating in 1960. He then joined the Sheet Metal Workers International, Local 16 as an apprentice. He worked as a Journeyman sheet metal mechanic until 1978.
Throughout his fifty year career as a member of Local 16 he worked on many of the buildings in and around the Portland area and on the West Coast. His first shop was American Sheet Metal in Portland. In August of 1987 he began working for R & J Metal Fabricators in Portland, where he remained until his retirement.
A good listener, who never moved or changed his phone number, he welcomed everyone except solicitors to shoot the breeze over coffee or a beer. Frugal to a fault, he rarely suffered nonsense and insisted on using the right tool for any job. He worked hard all his life but for those around him in the years before his retirement he will be remembered for his insistence on not working too hard. Those one the job with him will remember how important it was to “take a break” and think about it.
Bruce loved cars and owned an assortment over the years. Many memories will remain of the various restorations with his father. A devoted dog lover, he often marked the years by which dog he owned at the time. Knowing he is with them all now is a comfort to any pet owner.
A private celebration of life will occur at a future date. Condolences can be sent via email to his eldest son Mark ([email protected]). In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the “dog pond,” as Bruce called it, but otherwise known as The Oregon Humane Society (www.oregonhumane.org).
Bruce is preceded by his mother Delores (Everett) Schultz, his father Clare Schultz, and his sister Carole (Schultz) Briggs. He is survived by his son Mark and wife Kelli Schultz of Tigard, his son Michael and wife Maria Schultz of Portland, his grandchildren Rachel Schultz and Alex Schultz both of Portland.
