Biography:
On Monday, January 26, 2015 Betty June Fry lost her battle with Lung Cancer. Born in Mt Sterling, Illinois to Bernadine Potter and Louis Hammer she is survived by 7 of her 11 siblings; Betty being the oldest. At the age of approximately 13 she moved with Otto and Sara Nation to Chandler, Arizona where Otto bought a chicken ranch. A bird virus destroyed the chicken stock and the Nations embarked on another adventure to Salem, Oregon to buy a dairy farm where Betty met her husband of almost 66 years.
Married on April 2, 1949 Bill and Betty Fry had two children; Gary Fry and Linda (Fry) Pettiford. Bill started work at Columbia River Paper Co in 1950 (last known as Boise Cascade Corp) until his retirement in 1991 and Betty was a bookkeeper for a large furniture store in Salem and a State Farm Agent in Portland for more than 20 yrs. In 1968 Bill was offered a Management position in the Portland, Oregon office so they built a home in Tigard where they lived until Bill developed dementia and was moved to a care home in 2013. Betty remained in her house until her passing.
Over the last 45 years Betty and Bill enjoyed their property near Neskowin Beach on the Oregon coast as well as she volunteered for many years at the American Cancer Society and was a active member of the Calvin Presbyterian Church of Tigard where she also volunteered in several different roles. She was a longtime member of T.O.P.S. and she made many great friendships and enjoyed so many fun activities with the group throughout the years.
Betty loved small children, once owning a daycare in the 1950's with her mother-in-law as well as privately taking care of two children before Linda entered grade school. An avid gardener with a "green thumb" Mrs. Nation once commented "you'd rather buy flowers than eat". She especially enjoyed her rose garden which in her last days she was able to see from her window. Unfortunately it was winter but she envisioned her roses non-the- less. Betty will be remembered as a generous and thoughtful person who always advocated for someone who was "down and out".
