Berwyn Alfred Robertson was born in Logansport, Indiana on March 25, 1929, the fifth child of Carl Victor Robertson and Maude McLain. He spent his childhood in Detroit, Michigan. At 17 he joined the Army and was sent to Korea, Germany and Austria.
In Austria he met Maria Layer and her baby girl Lily. They married in 1951 but later divorced. In 1964, while stationed in Ft. Ort, California he met and married Inge Hensen. Together they raised two sons, Daniel and Swen. During the next ten years, he was deployed to Vietnam, Germany, Vietnam again and then to Portland, Oregon as an Advisor to the Reserve Army Unit. During this time in the Army he was decorated multiple times including being awarded the Silver Star.
Alf and Inge liked Oregon, they bought a house, and after one more tour in Germany, made it their home. Alf retired from the Army on March 28, 1974 as a Command Sergeant Major. After a short try to work in construction, he joined the Post Office and was a walking mail carrier for the next 15 years in NE Portland. He was a member of the American Legion Post #105 and later #56.
Alf loved to show Oregon to family and friends when they came to visit and never got tired of driving them to Mt. Hood, down the coast to the Redwoods or to Crater Lake. He and Inge took cruises to Alaska, Mexico, South American and the Caribbean.
In 1998 they moved to a one level house in Sherwood, Oregon. He loved his wife, children, grandchildren, his extended family and his neighbors. He is survived by his wife, Inge; daughter, Lily; sons, Daniel and Swen; brother, Robert; and grandchildren, Hailey, Keahi, Nathan and Helena.
