Randy left behind his sense of humor to his favorite children and grandchildren and his hidden candy stash to his wife (which he had told Debbi he would take to his coworkers and not eat himself)!
Randy was a great Man, Husband, Father, Grandfather (Boppy) and Great-Grandfather. He was born on June 29, 1953, in Omaha, Nebraska to the late Mary Meyers and was later adopted by the late Wayne & Hazel Frey, living in Aurora, Nebraska before settling in Sterling, Colorado.
Randy graduated from Sterling High School in 1971 and attended Northeastern Junior College where he played basketball in short ... very short shorts. Randy was an avid lover of 70’s music. In his younger years he was a Disc Jockey at a local Sterling radio station. Believe us when we say we always had to listen to the radio for hours and hours in case he dedicated a song to our mother, making us now lovers of 70’s music. He also had a fabulous singing voice and at one point was a member of the band The Mixed Emotions and owner of Beethoven’s, the local Disco, all while learning the family jewelry business before moving to the Longmont, Colorado area in 1990 where he remained before his passing.
In the early 2000’s, Randy was hired by the Adams County Sheriff’s Office where he worked, retired from, then worked again, because he could not just sit at home. He was employed at the Adams County Sheriff’s Office at the time of his passing.
Randy was genuine to a fault, a teddy bear at heart and yet he sugar-coated nothing. His extensive vocabulary was more than highly proficient at knowing more curse words than most people learned in a lifetime.
Randy leaves behind a dysfunctional family of which he was extremely proud. Often joking that our family was a mixture of the Griswold’s and the Focker’s, if you know, you know. What better life to live than one laughing during all the tough times.
Randy loved his family immensely, especially his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, his dog Matayo, and his best friend Jack. Randy was especially proud of his friends that became family at the Adams County Sheriff’s Office, which he spoke very highly of.
His words of encouragement, wisdom, and sometimes comfort, kept us all in line, taught us to love unconditionally, and laugh during the toughest of times. He often told us when we called him that he was just sitting in his chair “looking pretty” and what a tough job that was. He would also never miss an opportunity to remind us that he was “all that and a bag of chips.”
He will be sorely missed and is survived by his loving wife Debbi Frey of Mead, Colorado; his children Jill (Kevin) Olsen of Wiggins, Colorado; Chad (Nicole Adinolfe) Frey of Kiowa, Colorado; Jenna Godejohn of Longmont, Colorado, and Lyndsay (Larry) Adams of Broomfield, Colorado. The true lights of his life were his precious grandchildren Kyleigh (Evan) Schiel of Wiggins, Colorado; Keiaira (Michael Decker) Olsen of Thornton, Colorado; Karissa (Andrew) Martinez of Thornton, Colorado; Logan Godejohn of Tampa, Florida; Kaedin Godejohn of Longmont, Colorado; Trece & Talise Quintana of Greeley, Colorado and great-grandchildren Kinley Kembel (Schiel) & Camden Schiel of Wiggins, Colorado; Braxton Martinez of Thornton, Colorado and Kendyll Decker of Thornton, Colorado. He is also survived by many family friends, nephews, nieces, cousins, in-laws and by all who became his family with the Adams County Sheriff’s Office.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, a brother and beloved pets Beck and Tess.
There will be a public memorial service held on Saturday, December 30, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. at Olinger-Highland, 10201 Grant Street, Thornton, Colorado.
Memorial fund donations can be made in c/o of Debra Frey at any ENT Credit Union location.
The family would like to thank the Adams County Sheriff’s Office for your compassion and grace during this challenging time. A special thank you to Steven, Chad, and other Sheriff’s Office employees for your quick actions in assessing the situation and taking the time out of your day to personally drive him to the hospital, which we know was not an easy task. Your efforts that day have not gone unnoticed, and we will be forever grateful for you all!
We all loved My Honey/Dad/Boppy dearly and will never forget his tenacity, wit, charm, grace and undying love and caring for each and every one of us. It brings us peace knowing he is “sitting pretty” on the other side of the rainbow.
