Patricia Ann Mullen was born 0ctober 22, 1942 in Denver, Colorado to the late Charles Verlin and Marie C. Mullen. She passed away September 23, 2020 from health challenges associated with a very aggressive cancer. Pat would have been 78 years old in another month.
Pat was born with Cerebral palsy, which is a birth disability condition. Because of this, she required a great deal of physical training, help and care. This also included braces and surgeries in her very young years. The surgeries eliminated the absolute need for braces, but she had to use a cane to walk for many years. Her young life was very difficult.
During all of her childhood, youth and progress as she aged. She accepted all of this without complaint. -However-, it was a very difficult life. Her goal throughout her life was to be independent! She maintained this goal until the day of her passing.
Later in her life, it was necessary to use two canes, but she never gave up her independence and her insistence on doing things for herself. Many of her methods were ever ingenious solutions to her problems, for example, she took her clothes down a flight of stairs, sitting on her bottom, and then washing and drying them. She would not accept help for this. All of this went on went on until, just a few years ago. At that time, she finally agreed that she could not do everything for herself. She admitted that she needed help. She moved from her home to assisted living. Pat had lived in that her family home since her birth. Leaving that home after all those years was her one complaint. She missed her home so much.
She enjoyed the activities there in the assisted living home, but soon her legs would no longer support her at all. It was necessary for Pat to move to a full care nursing home; there she had to rely solely on being lifted into a wheelchair.
She went everywhere in that home with her chair, maneuvering wherever she wanted to go. The staff there said they would see her in the halls ---or the dining room--- or in the TV room many times a day. She was always on the go. They referred to her as “a sweet lady”.
Patricia is survived by two brothers, Jerry P. Mullen and Cole Var Mullen; a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded by her parents Charles Verlin and Marie C. Mullen; brothers: Charles Verlin Mullen, Jr. and James Dick Mullen.
Pat will be remembered and missed by all.
