Hari Walner, a long time Colorado artist and well known quilter, died
peacefully in the early morning of December 6, at the age of 79 in
Loveland. Born in 1940 in Chicago, Illinois to Alma and Paul Ramsey, the
family moved to Colorado in 1946. In 1958 Hari graduated from
Westminster High School in Westminster, Colorado, and subsequently
attended the American Academy of Art in Chicago where she received much of
her artist’s training.
Hari, whose birth name was Harriet, changed her name about 1960,
simplifying it to befit her artistic style and demeanor. She worked as a
graphic designer and illustrator in the Washington, D.C. area, for many
years before returning to Colorado in 1985. She married Gordon Snow on
July 20, 1991, and they moved to Loveland, Colorado, in 1998.
While she loved painting, Hari was best known in the quilting community
as a quilt artist as well as a writer and teacher. She traveled widely
on teaching invitations and was particularly well known as a designer of
Continuous-Line quilting patterns (2010) and as an expert in the
quilting style known as trapunto. Books she wrote of this style of
quilting include Exploring Machine Trapunto (1999) and Trapunto by
Machine (1996). She made samples in this technique for the Denver Art
Museum’s Textile Department.
Hari will be lovingly remembered for the breadth of her artistic
talents, for her humor, and for her love of friends and family, of music
and all things creative. She was revered and loved by her classmates
with whom she maintained many friendships throughout her life. She is
survived by her loving husband Gordon Snow, a son Ray Wallace aka
Murray Walner, stepson Ted (Kathy) Snow, and stepdaughter Kristy Pals.
She was a proud grandmother to Arie Tyler Pals, Molly Pals, Brittany Snow
and Madeline Snow. She is also survived by her brothers Paul Ramsey of Denver
and John Ramsey of San Diego, California. Another brother, Robert Ramsey,
died earlier this year.
