Hannah Houston was born on August 7, 1924 in Flushing, Ohio to the late Charlie and Annie Ligons-Hughes. Through that union she was the oldest of seven children. She moved to Denver, Colorado in 1950 where she married the late LC Houston from that union was six children.
Hannah was as a neighborhood mother who looked for other children in the 33rd block of Race Street such as the Brashears, Briggs, Crawford, Randolph, Robinson, Rodriguez, and the Sims.
She was also an extended mother figure to the children of her dear lifelong friend the late Mrs. Itaska Bland-Wilson, Mrs. Bernice Mason, Mrs. Lylaus Keyes, the late Mrs. Ruth Lucas, and the late Mrs. Betty Minton-Ross.
She reached out to the Alexander, Harris, Nally, and the Springer family at the 34th block of Race and Williams Street for mother support as well.
Besides being a mother figure Hannah was involved in organizations; for instance, she was proud member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Mu Mu Omega Sorority Aurora Chapter, American Legion Wallace Simpson Post 29, and the Disabled American Veterans.
She attended the Community College of Denver and earned an Associate’s Degree in Education. Furthermore, she continued her education at Metropolitan State of College and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Education as well.
She was the president of the PTA- Parent Teacher Association at Mitchell Elementary School and Manual High School.
Politics was one of her strong holds; for instance, she would work the polls during the midterm and general elections while attending the neighborhood caucus.
Hannah is preceded by her following late siblings Mrs. Ruth Campbell, Mr. Robert Hughes, Mrs. Charles Leavelle, Mr. Grady Hughes and Mr. Fred Hughes, and one surviving sibling Mrs. Julia Jones.
Preceded by Hannah’s children are Leah Houston, Samuel Houston, Miriam Houston-Holmes, the late Seba Houston, Rachelle Houston, and the late Deborah Houston-Hayes, and daughter Ruth McKinney.
Grandchildren Kai Dennis, Kendall Duckworth, late Keith Walker, Tycie Holmes, Tori Holmes, Robert Hayes Jr. Stephen Hayes, Mykayla Searles-Houston, Lamar McKinney, Crystal Jones, Cyneetha Anderson, Chareese Windom, Terraye Windom, Lloyd Windom, Travis Windom, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, a host of other relatives and close friends
Hannah Hughes-Houston will be deeply missed by all of us; however, her heart, legacy, soul, and spirit will always remain inside us in our hearts forever.
A visitation for Hannah will be held Monday, October 18, 2021 at12:00 PM at Olinger Highland Mortuary & Cemetery, 10201 Grant St, Thornton, CO 80229, followed by a funeral service at 1pm and committal in the cemetery.
