Gary was born February 16, 1945, the second of four sons to Harold and Charlotte Merritt. He graduated from Englewood High School in 1963. Gary was a native of Colorado who also spent time in Las Vegas, Wichita and Thailand while he was in the Air Force. He served in the Air Force from 1965 - 1969.
After his military service he worked for the USDA as a meat inspector and retired in 2007 as an enforcement investigation analysis officer.
Gary is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary Ann and Son Trent Merritt (Jodi), Daughter Cindi Smith (Greg), Grandchildren Tori, Gunnar, Hunter, Alayna, Luke, Colt and Great Grandchild Gage, Brothers Lee (Lois) and Daryl and Brothers-In-Law Daniel Rasmussen (Deb) and David Rasmussen (Robin) and life long friend Howard Leino as well as many other family and friends.
Gary enjoyed many hobbies and interests, some of those being: camping, fishing, woodworking, golf, building and flying model airplanes, competitive shooting and bowling. He also enjoyed listening to talk radio and watching Fox News.
He has been active in Boy Scouts, the Independent Order of Foresters, the Elks Club, the American Legion, the Vietnam Veterans of America and PAMVET Breakfast Club. He was a member of the Englewood High School Alumni lunch bunch. He was also a proud member of Mount Calvary Lutheran Church.
He loved to volunteer and spent 17 years at the Platte Valley Medical Center and helped with senior lunches. He greatly enjoyed helping others.
He enjoyed spending time with his family and would proudly share stories about his children and grandchildren.
A funeral service for Gary will be held Friday, January 31, 2025 at 10:00 AM at Mt Calvary Lutheran Church, 650 S Park Ave, Fort Lupton, CO 80621. Following the funeral service will be a committal service at 2:00 PM at Fort Logan National Cemetery, 4400 W Kenyon Ave, Denver, CO 80236.
