Wilda May Erskine Scott was born in 1924 on the family farm in Euphrasia Township near Markdale. She spoke fondly of her early life. After completing High School in Meaford at 17 she was off to Toronto to earn a business school diploma. During the war she worked at the airport in Malton where she met Bill Scott. They married in 1945 and moved to Haileybury Wilda was busy with babies Wayne and Sandra.
During the Korean Crisis the family moved onto the airforce base at North Bay where Deb was born. After Bill left the airforce his job kept the family moving, (lakefront house in North Bay, Orillia, Timmins where James and Rob joined the family, Thunder Bay for a couple of years, Clarkson and then Thornhill, where they lived for several decades. Wilda updated high school credits then went to Seneca College for her ECE certification. She enjoyed working with children!
Wilda always read avidly and enjoyed music. She took up painting and found water colours her favourite medium. Wilda and Bill travelled in retirement including Bolivia where Bill assisted on a gas project while Wilda volunteered at an orphanage. She loved her time there! Wilda travelled widely following Bill’s passing in 2006 - England, Egypt, Jordan, Ireland, Alaska and Mexico.
Wilda moved into assisted living at the Roxborough in Newmarket “like a cruise ship on land”. After her broken hip she moved to Cedarvale Lodge Care Community. She received great care from staff but most particularly from Myrna who has been her loving care giver for the last year.
Although life was more limited by COVID restrictions and dementia she said "At my age, I embrace each day and enjoy the blue sky, fall leaves, fresh snow, and the wind on my face. Small pleasures like a bowl of ice cream or the taste of chocolate are always appreciated.” A bowl of raspberries never lasted long!
Wilda’s greatest joy was spending time with family. Wilda was predeceased by Bill (2006), grandson Shawn Riches (1999), and daughter in law Katie Scott (2014). She leaves 5 children, 9 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
She will be missed.
In lieu of flowers donations to both Sleeping Children Around the World and the Salvation Army are encouraged.
