With great sadness we announce the passing of Sonia Louise Grant at Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH), following a nine-month battle with acute myeloid leukemia, which she fought with dignity and courage.
She leaves behind her husband of 48 years, Jim, daughter Dr Allison (Tomi Nieminen), grandson James, sister Elsie Gauthier (Jean and family), brother Tom, and sisters-in-law Lynda Chicorli and Sister Patricia Grant. Baby James was the light of her life, and kept her spirits high during her exhausting illness. She was predeceased by her parents, Walter and Anne, brother, Rob, and sister, Eleanor Cummins.
Sonia was raised in Thunder Bay and moved to Toronto in 1961 to begin her career with Air Canada in both Toronto and Montreal. She left the business in 1984 to raise her daughter.
She and husband Jim were great world travelers, from the plains of Africa to the headwaters of the Amazon, and most points in between. Since retiring, they fell in love with Florida and its requisite pastime of golf, and enjoyed many winters there with wonderful friends.
At Sonia's request, there will be a private funeral mass at Blessed Sacrament Church. A public celebration of her life will be held at Vaughan Estate (Vaughan Ballroom), 2075 Bayview Ave, Toronto at 4pm on Saturday, February 9th, 2013.
We would like to acknowledge the outstanding care provided by Dr. Mark Minden and the staff on 15B/16P at PMH. We would also like to thank all her friends in Canada and Florida for the overwhelming displays of support; the vast number of well-wishes is a testament to the open-hearted, loving woman that Sonia was.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in her name to the Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation.
