Mary was born on a farm that has been in her family since 1798, the daughter of Howard and Gladys Barnard (neé Scarrow). She grew up with her younger brother Clifford in the close-knit village of Winona where her father was Postmaster. Following in her parents' footsteps, family and community were very important to Mary and she spent her life caring for and giving back to those around her. She attended high school in Hamilton where she met her future husband, Robert (Bob) Nutley (1925-2012). Mary worked as Assistant Postmistress in Winona and for IBM and the Liquor Control Board of Ontario in Hamilton. In 1950 she married Bob and joined him in his adopted hometown of Toronto. She was the adored "Muvvy" to their daughters Marcia (and her husband Douglas Martin) and Barbara (and her husband Neil Hunter) and much-loved Grammy to Dylan Nutley Hunter. Mary is survived by her brother Clifford "Bud" Barnard, nephews Scott and Wayne and niece Jill. She volunteered for many organizations including Sunnybrook Hospital's Veterans' Wing, UNICEF, Toronto's Miles for Millions walkathon and Friends of the North York Public Library. Mary was an avid reader and believed that literacy was the key to lifelong success. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 25th from 7-9 p.m. and Thursday, June 26th from 2-4 p.m. at the R.S. Kane Funeral Home, 6150 Yonge Street (at Goulding, south of Steeles). Donations may be made to Friends of Toronto Public Library, North Chapter, 5120 Yonge St., 3rd Floor Admin., Toronto, ON, M2N 5N9. Many thanks to the staff at The Marleigh in Unionville for their loving care in Mary's last months.
