Died peacefully on 17 Sept. in his 90th year, surrounded by family. Beloved husband of Joan for 60 years, adored father of Elizabeth (Ron), Penelope (Jon), Mary (James) and Michael (Irene), devoted grandfather of Jennifer, Leslie, Ian, Eleanor, Colin, Suzanne, Neil, Rachel, Peter, Paul, Hannah, Troy and Matthew, and great-grandfather of Mimi, Kai, Kimi, Benjamin and Ashton.
Born in St. John, Barbados in 1922, Fred attended Lodge School, winning the Barbados Scholarship in Classics, followed by the Gold Medal in Classics at McGill in 1945. He earned his PHD at the University of Toronto, where he taught for over 50 years, inspiring students and publishing Greek Fortifications and Studies in Hellenistic Architecture.
Among Fred's greatest loves were his family and his adopted country Canada, leading to many trips to the Rockies and the restoration of the Suttaby log house in Muskoka. A shining example of grace and dignity, he will be missed by all whose lives he touched.
Visitation: RS Kane Funeral Home, 6150 Yonge St. 2-3:30 pm and 6-8 pm Friday Sept. 23/11. Funeral at Holy Trinity Anglican Church, 140 Brooke St Thornhill. Saturday Sept. 24/11 at 11:00 am. Reception to follow. Private Burial service in Muskoka Sept. 25. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Salvation Army or Oxfam.
