Eon Gyu Shin was born in 1938 to his father Nan Bok Shin and his mother Yi Boon Jeon in Seoul, Korea. He was the eldest son and had five brothers and sisters. In 1957, Eon graduated from Yong San High School and in 1961 he graduated with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Yonsei University. In Korea, he worked for an American company called IDC as an electrical engineer. In 1965, Eon married Bok Sil Lee in Seoul, Korea.
Eon and Bok have three children together: Andy (Ho Jun) who is married to Sylvie; Jacob (Ho Sok) who is married to Christine (Hye-Kyu); and Linda. Eon and Bok have 4 grandchildren, Jeremie, Sophie, Florence and Scarlett.
In 1969, he immigrated to Canada. That year, he got a job at Canadian National Railway (CN) and worked there for 34 years until he retired at the age of 65. During his retirement he enjoyed gardening and sharing what he grew with his neighbours and family. Bok enjoyed cooking what he grew in the garden and all of his family loved meeting together and eating this food. He happily supported his loving wife with her community activity and volunteer work.
For the last six months, he had a difficult time due to his extensive treatment for cancer. He suffered through side effects from his treatment but still managed to make his family happy and brought them closer together. He remained a rock for his family. Recently, he and his family were thankful that the latest test results showed the treatment was successful and he was recovering from cancer. Unexpectedly, he contracted pneumonia and sadly passed away on Wednesday, January 25, 2017 peacefully and surrounded by his loving wife and family.
Visitation service for Eon will be on Monday, January 30, 2017 at 7:30pm and his funeral service on January 31, 2017 at 10am. Both will be held at Vaughan Community Church, 200 Racco Parkway, Thornhill, ON, L4J 8X9.
Through 51 years of marriage with his wife Bok, they had a happy home that he was so thankful for. In his 50th anniversary card to his wife, Eon wrote: "To my dear Bok Sil. I was so happy every day for the last 50 years with you! Let's try to continue to love and care for each other and be healthy and happy together until we go to heaven. Love Eon Gyu"
His wife Bok wrote a card to Eon for the same anniversary that read: "My dearest husband. You are a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. You have done a great job for us with all your energy through 50 years of marriage. Today, we are happy and thankful to God for our last 50 years together. Please be healthy, vibrant and happy all the time. Love Bok on our 50th anniversary."
Eon was always at his happiest when he was with his wife, children and grandchildren.
