Darryl was born on April 15, 1936 in Lindsay, Ontario to Alan and Belle Thompson, a younger brother to Joyce. He passed away peacefully in Unionville on March 1, 2024 at the age of 87.
Darryl met his future wife Gail in Toronto in the latter part of high school when his family moved in across the street from hers. They were married for 62 years before Gail passed away a little over a year ago.
After high school, Darryl completed his Chartered Accountant designation in the early days of their marriage and parenthood. He spent most of his career as the Controller for Duriron of Canada (later FlowServe). His friendships from those days continued throughout his life.
Darryl was an avid outdoorsman. He loved to spend time at the cottage, to travel and camp with his family, and to fish (many years of fly in fishing trips in northern Ontario with his buddies). He spent many years curling (a love he passed on to his son Warren and daughter-in-law Johanne), which was highlighted by winning the Canada Life Third Event in 1970. Darryl was a house league hockey coach and often the local kids would ask him to come play street hockey, even if Warren wasn’t home. He regularly enjoyed playing cards (euchre and bridge) and loved to garden (his annual winter grow-op of geraniums in the basement was a sight!). Together Darryl and Gail served on the Holy Trinity Church Garden Committee, where Darryl was Treasurer after his retirement.
More than anything though, Darryl loved to putter, inside or out. He often created his own fixes for things, tied a few too many knots (many of his own invention) to hold things down/together, and always had a list on the go of “Things I may do”. Satisfaction was adding something to the list just to be able to immediately cross it off as complete (also a trait passed on to his kids!) Much of what Darryl learned of handiwork came from his relationship with his father-in-law and his time at the McEwen cottage.
Darryl was always a social man with a good sense of humour. He and Gail gathered many friends over their lifetimes. Family meant so much to them and was the centre of their world: Their son Warren and his wife Johanne, and their sons Eric (& Megan) and Paul; their daughter Linda and her husband Stéphane, and their sons Marc and Philip. Darryl’s late sister Joyce and her husband Ted, their children Peter (& Ulrike) and Katharine (& Volker), Gail’s late sister Donna and her husband Don, their sons Bruce (& Barb), Brian (& Judy), and Doug (& Caroline).
He was a gentleman and will be greatly missed.
Visitation will be Tuesday April 30 from 3pm-6pm at Kane-Jerrett Thornhill (www.kanejerrett-thornhill.ca) and the funeral will be held at 11am on Wednesday May 1 at Holy Trinity Church Thornhill (www.holytrinity-thornhill.ca). The funeral service will also be available online through Holy Trinity’s YouTube channel.
