Arthur Dexter Gynn passed peacefully, at Sunnybrook Veterans Centre on May 21, 2022, at the age of 103. Dexter was preceded in death by his twin brother Mac and sister-in-law Joyce Gynn. Born in Winnipeg Manitoba, he was named after Uncle Arthur, his father’s brother. Mac and Dexter grew up in a loving home with their parents, Evalyn & Fred, Grandmother Mary Dexter, Great-Grandmother Fraser and Aunt Jessie Keller. Summers were spent at a cottage in Minaki, on sailboats, canoes and golf courses.
Throughout WWII, Lieutenant Dexter Gynn served honorably on the HMS Eskimo Destroyer in the Royal Navy. He then moved to Toronto where he taught for 24 years at Earl Beatty Public School before retiring in 1984. Dexter believed in the power of education and spent his life helping others. He loved classical music, current events, swimming at the Fitness Insti-tute, golf and lawn bowling.
Known for his cheerful demeanor, zest for life, kindness, dress-ing in beige and giving away his clothes, Dexter was an inspira-tion to his family. He will be remembered for saying, “I am do-ing the best I can “ , “take things one day at a time,” and as he aged, “don’t focus on what you can’t do ; focus on what you can do.”
He was a truly beloved Uncle who meant the world to Alice (Dave) Messenger, David (Sonja) Gynn and their children Katy (Alex) Scott, Rob (Sarah) Messenger, Matt Gynn and Stephanie Gynn.
The family would like to thank the entire staff at Sunnybrook Veterans Centre especially Lynne, Leah, Kim and Greg for their compassionate care over the past 10 years. Not surprisingly, one of Dexter’s last words was thank you.
A memorial service will be held at Kane-Jerrett Funeral Home, 8088 Yonge St., Thornhill, ON on Friday June 3, 2022 at 11 am. For online condolences please visit www.kanejerrett-thornhill.ca .
In lieu of flowers, donations to Sunnybrook Veterans Centre would be appreciated.
