Mr. Sexton was born on November 2, 1949 in Guilford County, North Carolina to Ray Von Sexton and Grace Scarboro Sexton. Growing up Joe attended Greenwood Baptist Church.
Joe loved his country and was very patriotic. His love of country was demonstrated by Joe’s military service with four years of his life dedicated to the United States Army, with additional years dedicated to the United States Air Force and additional service in the Flotilla in the United States Coast Guard. During Joe’s Army service he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal W/60 Device as well as the Presidential Unit Citation.
Joe was preceded in death by his mother, Grace Scarboro Sexton in 2015.
Surviving is his wife Debbie Sexton of the home; father Ray Von Sexton of Thomasville; sons Travis Sexton and Thomas Sexton, both of Asheville, NC; and a sister Janet Sexton Carter and husband Bobby Carter of Thomasville.
A celebration of Mr. Sexton’s life will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, February 8, 2020 at Greenwood Baptist Church at 1010 Lexington Ave., Thomasville, NC 27360 with Pastor Mitch Hayworth officiating. The family will receive friends following the celebration of life at the church.
Per Joe’s request he was laid to rest among many other United States Service members at Salisbury National Cemetery. The family would like to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
