Wayne Allen Walker of The Woodlands, Texas went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, February 13, 2024, with his family by his side. Wayne was born on September 27, 1947, in Galveston, Texas to Raymond and Alma Walker. Upon graduating from Galveston Ball High School, Wayne was drafted to play baseball for the Philadelphia Phillies but decided to attend Sam Houston State University on a scholarship. While at Sam Houston State University, Wayne joined the military where he proudly served his country as a fire protection and crash rescue specialist in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War.
After his time in the United States Air Force, Wayne went on to become a firefighter and worked in this capacity for over 40 years. He spent time with the Houston Fire Department, Conroe Fire Department, and finished out the final 30 years of his career at The Woodlands Fire Department, retiring in 2016 in the position of Deputy Chief. Chief Walker’s contributions were instrumental in safeguarding the communities he served. Chief Walker loved firefighting and his firefighter family. His legacy as a dedicated firefighter and leader will forever be cherished within the firefighting community and beyond. His heart for serving others was a driving force in his life and something that he’s remembered for by all who knew him.
In addition to his passion for firefighting, Wayne’s interests included baseball, duck hunting, saltwater fishing, golfing, and spending time with his family. Wayne was the ultimate family man. He leaves to cherish his memory, the love of his life and wife of 42 years, Kendall Walker; his daughter Casey DeArmond and her husband Blake and their children, Beau and Cooper; his son Kyle Walker and his wife Jessica and their children, Theo and Elle. Wayne dedicated countless hours to coaching and mentoring his son Kyle, who pitched for the University of Texas, along with many other young ball players. On top of coaching baseball, Wayne spent many hours practicing with his daughter Casey, who played basketball for the University of Oklahoma, shooting hoops on their home driveway basketball goal. Family was a pillar of Wayne’s legacy.
Most who knew Wayne would describe him as a unique combination of tough and gentle. He had a powerful physical presence with a genuinely authentic soft side. Wayne was a man of principle who was steadfast and consistent in all aspects of his life. He was a true salt of the earth and a patriot who loved his country.
Wayne is loved and missed by so many, including his brother, Raymond, and sister-in-law, Sandy Walker; mother-in-law, Christine Stedman; sister-in-law, Julie Long; as well as his cousins, nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, many dear friends, and last, but not least, his firefighter family. Wayne was a devout Christian, and while we are deeply saddened by his passing, we have peace knowing he is now with our Lord and Savior.
In his memory, donations can be made to The Woodlands Firefighters Foundation. Wayne supported this organization and their mission to assist first responders in Montgomery County.
