Wallace (otherwise known as Wally or Waldo) Benton Hughes passed away on Sunday evening, August 7, 2022 in The Woodlands, Texas. He was born November 28, 1947 in Houston, Texas to Benton and Geraldine Hughes. He grew up in the Sharpstown area and attended Cullen Junior High and Lee High School. He was a city-wide track star in junior and senior high school. He set records in the 220- and 440-yard events. His friend Steve Simmons doesn’t recall him ever losing a race at either school. He seemed to be a natural. Wally graduated from Sam Houston State University with a degree in finance. He was then hired by a large savings and loan company where he was promoted to manager of their downtown office. He later joined Oshman’s Sporting Company and managed their team sales of uniforms, bats, gloves, etc. He was quite successful in this position.
He had two sons, Nicholas Hughes and Grant Hughes. He later joined a trailer hitch company. While he was heading a booth for the trailer hitch company at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo; he met Marcia who was at the next booth for the company she worked for. They had an immediate connection and after dating for a while were married on June 2, 2002. He later retired to become a full-time caretaker and dad to Marcia’s daughter Haley.
He had an extreme sense of humor and never met a stranger. His sister-in-law would see him talking to strangers and say, “They’re getting Wallyed!” He had a passion for playing golf with his golf buddies, hunting with his two sons and watching the Astros with his wife. He loved to travel and went on many vacations to St. Thomas and Playa Del Carmen. People would love to hear him spin tales about his past when he was a child and later when he was a young adult and be amazed that he was so mischievous when he was younger. He had lifelong friends that he stayed in touch with.
The family would like to thank our church family at Breath of Life Church as well as all the friends for reaching out, handling tasks and being there for comfort.
Wally is survived by his wife, Marcia; his sons Nicholas and wife Kalynn; and Grant; his granddaughters Jaiden and Sommer. He is preceded in death by his parents, Benton and Geraldine, his brother David and his stepdaughter Haley.
Nicholas Hughes, Grant Hughes, Steve Simmons, Dan Hamilton, Jeff Hurst, and Sonny Mosby will serve as pallbearers. The family encourages guests to wear tropical or golf apparel as Wally often wore his Tommy Bahama shirts and loved to play golf.
