Sandra Suzanne York Collins, affectionately known as Suzy by loved ones, age 68, passed away peacefully on July 19, 2023, surrounded by her family who will continue to honor her legacy by living life to the fullest. Her courageous battle with cancer has come to an end, and she now finds solace and rest in the arms of her loving Savior, Jesus Christ.
Born on December 20, 1954, Suzy spent her childhood between Kannapolis, North Carolina and Houston, Texas.
Suzy graduated from Alief Hastings High School in 1974, and prioritized family over career aspirations. At the tender age of 20, she married John Collins and became a mother. She had five children, whom she adored with all her heart. Suzy’s boundless love for the twelve grandchildren that would follow was evident in the stories she would tell anytime you saw her. She could never spend enough time with them.
During her formative years, Suzy developed an unwavering love for the water and for swimming in particular. The water was her sanctuary and swimming was a passion throughout her life. This was evidenced by the fact that her five children were all able to swim before they walked. Suzy’s fervor for swimming inspired her to open Swimming Stages Swim School, which she managed until her health would no longer allow. She took great pride and joy in teaching kids to swim and seeing the positive impact she could make on them.
Beyond all of Suzy’s earthly joys, her heart ultimately belonged to her Savior. She wanted nothing more than for everyone she knew to experience the same love and faith that she found in Him.
Suzy was preceded in death by her parents; Martha Julia Hartis-York and Arthur Anthony York; and her dear brother, Robert Daniel Harkey. She is survived by her children, Tara Collins (John) Ivascu, Marla Leigh (Brandon) Nelson, Michael Wayne (Stephanie) Collins, Brandon Lyle Collins, and Alisha Michelle Collins. She is also survived by her 12 grandchildren, Alainah Jade, Addysen Lene, Christian Michael, Nolan Michael, Tyson Allan, Devon Anne, Elizabeth Claire, John Matthew, Jaiden Neftali, Julieta Emi, Lilianna Grace, and Dawson Lux. Additionally, she is survived by her siblings, Lacy York, Cindy (Ken) Freeman, and Cheryl Landeche.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Suzy’s life and her deep devotion to her faith at Forest Park The Woodlands Funeral Home, located at 18000 Interstate 45-S, The Woodlands, Texas, on Saturday, July 29, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. A visitation will precede the service in The Woodlands at 10:00 a.m. and a graveside burial will follow at 2:00 p.m. in College Station, Texas. There will be no formal procession to the burial, located at the Aggie Field of Honor & Memorial Cemetery, but everyone is welcome to attend.
May Suzy’s memory be eternal, and may she rest in the arms of our Lord and find eternal peace in His loving embrace.
