It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Margaret Jones Barnett, our beloved “Granny” on Saturday, October 8, 2022. “Mardee,” as she was known to friends and loved ones, was born to Margaret and T. Paul Jones on April 19,1947, in Bellaire Texas, the then small suburb of Houston. She married her sweetheart, Dan Barnett, in 1969, and remained married for 28 years until his passing in 1997. Mardee graduated from The University of Houston with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1969, and went to work for Chevron until the birth of her first child. After raising her three children, she returned to work teaching, and attained her Master of Education from UofH in 1998.
Her children and grandchildren were her passion. An active and frequent volunteer at school and church activities, she even served as President of the Westfeld Big Red Band booster program, as well as attending every scholastic event possible. Caretaking was one of her favorite pastimes and she spent much energy making sure that others had all that they needed to be as happy and fulfilled as possible.
An accomplished cook, she was endlessly trying out new recipes for family dinners, but there were many favorites that are fondly remembered. When it came time for them to leave home, each of her children were gifted a “Mom’s Recipes Cookbook” so that the next generation could enjoy her Cheese Soup and King Ranch Chicken.
Upon retiring from her career in Aldine ISD, gardening became her favorite activity. She tended her plants, flowers and trees right up until the end of her life. Her herb and vegetable garden were her most prized, and she frequently used her own produce when she cooked. Mardee’s love of gardening prompted her to enroll in the prestigious Texas A&M Master Gardener program, which she completed with certification in 2018.
Mardee was an avid reader, often writing professional reviews for publishers. Taking up other hobbies throughout her life, her most recent passion was crochet work. Her family was showered every Christmas with blankets, pillows, hats, mittens, shawls, slippers and toys that were lovingly created by her talented hands.
Granny will be dearly missed by all who loved her. She is survived by her son Fletcher and his wife Kim, her daughter Molly and her husband Jason, and her daughter Catherine and her husband Brian, as well as seven grandchildren - Mary Grace, Avery, Daniel, Willa, Evelyn, Brandon and Maddox.
Services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, October 17, 2022 in the Grand Hall at Forest Park The Woodlands Funeral Home located at 18000 Interstate 45 South, The Woodlands, Texas.
