Lois Worcester was born in Dunkirk, NY, in 1938 to loving parents Victoria (Babcia) and Frank (Dza Dza) Weglinski who immigrated from Poland through Ellis Island in 1917. As the youngest, Lois shared her childhood home with her siblings, Irene and Harry. Embracing her Polish and Catholic heritage, she grew up surrounded by laughter, extended family, and the delightful aromas of traditional dishes like pierogis, kielbasa, and golumpki. Lois was a vibrant presence in her community and a star in her high school, serving as the captain of the baton twirlers, a member of the marching band, and eventually, the prom queen.
Lois pursued her passion for the arts by attending Ohio University and earning an M.A. degree in fine arts and education. Her college journey nurtured her love for design, painting, and flowers. During college, she met Tom “Screaming Eagle” Worcester, an aspiring physics student who would become her husband. Tom, is known for his adventurous spirit, particularly his habit of jumping out of airplanes before they safely landed, in the 101st Airborne. After getting married, they moved to Happy Valley, PA while Tom attended Penn State finishing his PHD and Lois was an elementary art school teacher.
Lois’s life was a tapestry of diverse adventures and relocations, guiding her family through various homes in Phoenix, AZ; Mendham, NJ; Wilton, CT; and The Woodlands, TX. Her unwavering dedication to service and selflessness was evident in her volunteer work with numerous charitable organizations. Lois was a cherished friend and community pillar, active in PEO and achieving the status of Master Gardener, where she found joy in growing herbs. Lois also founded the Friends of the Library in addition to countless other charities focused on building community and supporting those in need.
Her four children survive Lois: her sons, Tom Worcester of Nashville, TN, and Scott Worcester of Roxbury, CT; and her daughters, Julie Sheppard of The Woodlands, TX, and Amy Worcester Lanzi of Manhattan, NY. Her legacy of love and service continues through her eight grandchildren: Tommy, Brittany, Victoria, Samantha, Charlotte, Jackson, Cole, and Vincent.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the caregiving team who brought joy to Lois’s life in her final days, especially Teresa, Rossie, Jennifer, JRG, Carly, Jacqueline, and Dr. Davis, who supported the family.
We thank God for the gift of Lois’s life, the blessing of our time with her, and the enduring lessons of humility, service, and grace she imparted. Her joy lives on through her children, grandchildren, and every blooming flower.
