He was born in Anniston, Alabama on April 27, 1940. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. in 1963. He received a Masters of Business Administration from University of Houston in 1981.
He was married to Delores Elkins on June 5, 1963.
John served in the Regular Army from 1958 to 1974, followed by U.S. Army Reserves from 1974 to 2000 when he retired as colonel. He served two tours in Vietnam and was awarded a Silver Star, five Bronze Stars, a Purple Heart, two Air Medals, an Army Commendation Medal, and Vietnam Cross of Gallantry.
His civilian work included General Foods, Champion Paper Company, Walk Haydel Associates, James River Corporation, and Fortune Personnel Consultants of Houston.
John was an active Rotary Club member in Ashland, Wisconsin. He volunteered for many years at Michael E. DeBakey VA Hospital at the Houston Medical Center. He had a passion for tennis, reading, travel, and family. He was a member of The Woodlands United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Dee, daughter, Katherine Morgan Washburn and son, James Morgan and his wife, Dawn; grandchildren, Katie Washburn, Amy Washburn, Callie Morgan, Dawson Morgan, Kasper Kring, Cody Deaton, Brittney Deaton, Bridget Deaton; sister Paula Byrens and her husband Dave, brother Jeptha Morgan, and nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial service will be held at 9:30 am at The Woodlands United Church on Saturday, July 18, 2015.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or to The Woodlands United Methodist Church.
