James G. Horres Jr, known as Grier to most, was born in Charleston, South Carolina on September 13, 1945. He was a "Jack of all trades," to say the least, and wore a smile on his face wherever he went. Grier was full of jokes and loved to have a good time, but was the best man for the job when in need of a sincere conversation or simple advice. He never met a stranger, and his "Gift of Gab" was a quality you could never forget. Grier was creative, innovative, and your all round Go-To man. James Grier Horres Jr. touched so many lives, and all who have met him hold a special place in their hearts for such a dear friend. In the end, we all have a story to tell; This is his.
As a young boy, Grier developed a passion for hunting, fishing, and golf, as well as other outdoor activities and sports. He enjoyed spending countless hours with nature, and continued to keep these things close to his heart throughout the years. He loved his family, and spent most of his time with his father, James, his mother, Virginia, and his 2 sisters, Donna and Kay.
After graduating high school, Grier joined the Air Force. He spent 4 years traveling the world and returned to the civilian world as a Viet Nam Veteran. The years following his term in the military were quite busy for Grier. He held many positions in various fields and was sheer proof that we can be, and do, as many things as we'd like in our lifetime. Throughout these years, Grier worked as a hunting guide and owned multiple Skeet, Trap and Field businesses. He was The President of The United States Division for Fiocchi Ammunition, one of Italy's oldest and largest ammo manufacturers. He was a body guard for Grammy Award Winning Tejano Recording Artist, Freddy Fender, and owned 2 bars in New Orleans, Louisiana. He loved to oil paint in his spare time, and also sold hand- painted T-shirts in the French Quarter on the weekends. Eventually, he found himself in the Fastener business which is where he continued to work his way up for the next 30 years.
Meanwhile, When Grier was 36, he met the love of his life, Kelly Patricia Strickland. She was 20 at the time, and it was not long after they met that they were wed. They were married for 3 years before they expanded their family with 3 beautiful children. Olivia Danielle, born in 1985, Morgan Rachael, born in 1989, and James Grier Horres III, born in 1990. He was an amazing Father and loved his children very much. Grier was always known to be incredibly strict and he made sure to instill great work ethic and morals in his children. He was so proud of each of them, and although he didn't agree with everything they did, he stood behind them no matter what. He was definitely a family man, and his, always came first.
James Grier Horres Jr. has touched so many lives and will never be forgotten. His 67 years of life were jam packed with excitement, adventure, love, faith, hard work, and lifelong relationships that were created with every person he ever met. There are truly no words to describe what a wonderful man he was and he will remain vividly in our hearts forever.
