She was a cosmetologist for most of her adult working life and helped brighten many women’s days with a beautiful hair style. When she initially arrived in Houston in the late 1950s, she was a nanny for a prominent Houston family and lived in the most exclusive part of Houston in River Oaks.
After retiring, she enjoyed going on several cruises with her friends at the congregation she attended. She also was fortunate to travel to Mexico countless times to visit family. She enjoyed her trip to Spain in the Basque Community as it was clearly evident by how happy she looked in her photos. Other prominent cities that she visited were New York City, San Francisco and Toronto. There is a great photo of her standing at the base of Lombard Street, the world’s crookedest street, with the all the flowers behind her.
She was fond of collecting decorations and novelties of elephants, chickens, giraffes and dogs. She always had a radio playing at her home so that she could listen to light tunes from the 1940s to the 1970s. She was fond of walking in the Heights neighborhood and shopping.
We are extremely proud that she never owned a computer in her life. This meant that experiencing life and personal relationships with people was more special to her than any virtual experience could ever provide.
Irene was a dedicated mother who was always there for her children and made home life enjoyable and comfortable. She was an excellent cook and made the most delicious Mexican food that spoiled her children who thought no Mexican restaurant could compare to mom’s home cooking.
Irene was preceded in death by her mother Leocadia, father Nicolas, paternal grandfather Eugenio and paternal grandmother Nieves Alvarez, maternal grandfather Roman and maternal grandmother Paula, husband Sabino Diaz, brother Reynario, and niece Leslie.
She is survived by her son Hector Diaz, son Matthew Diaz, daughter Melba Elaine Diaz, sister Evelia, sister-in-law Blanca, nephew Manuel Perez (wife Carmen Perez Guajardo), niece Christian Paulin, nephew Misael Paulin, nephew Reynario Yudistire, and Abieser, grandnephew Hector Manuel Perez Guajardo, grandniece Ana Karen Perez Guajardo, Alberto Diaz, Carmen Diaz, Perez, Guadalupe Diaz, Santos Diaz, Raul Diaz, Leticia Diaz, Lili Diaz, Rosie Diaz, and numerous other nieces and nephews.
Irene enjoyed her friendships with all her friends from her congregation especially Michelle Collier, Beverly Jones, JoAnn French, and Philip and Linny Branch.
The family would like to thank all of her friends from her congregation for your loving and caring friendship with our mother. Your friendship meant so much to her. We would also like to thank her caretaker Monica Lopez for her loving care during her final months.
Irene Diaz will be laid to rest at Forest Park The Woodlands Cemetery with private ceremonies.
