Flor de Maria Garzon de Velasco, affectionately known by loved ones as Nona, passed away peacefully and surrounded by her family on December 4, 2022 at 5:09 PM CST in Conroe, Texas. She was born to Romualdo Garzon Acero and Ana Francisca Rey Anaya in Delicias, Venezuela, on May 15, 1920 and was the 10th child of 11 children. She was 102 years old.
She married Francisco Velasco Parra in Colombia and had two sons and a daughter. Nona worked as a vocational nurse in several rural towns in Colombia and Venezuela. However, her preferred titles were “Mother and representative of the LORD Jesus Christ.” She returned to her home country of Venezuela in 1973 to escape the Colombian political unrest and violence where she finished raising her family. Some of her proudest accomplishments include becoming a Relief Society President for the Colombia-Venezuela mission of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, receiving the “Most Dedicated Visiting Teacher Award” in Salt Lake City, Utah and while working for the U.S. Social Services Office, being recognized as the most devoted “foster-grandmother of the region”. Her proudest accomplishment, though, was becoming a U.S. Citizen in 1998. She was the happiest when she was surrounded by her family and children who she enjoyed on almost a daily basis. She was also a prayer warrior and a woman of incredible faith who never doubted God’s promises and brought upon our family many incredible miracles throughout her lifetime.
She is survived by her children, Frank Velasco, Juan Velasco, and Sonia Clayton; her grandchildren, Aaron Clayton, Leica Jones, Sophia Velasco, and Josie Heaton; and her great grandchildren, Samuel and Daniel Clayton, and Florence and Minerva Jones.
The funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 10, 2022 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints located at 4181 Trench Ln., Spring, TX 77386. Interment will follow at Forest Park The Woodlands Cemetery located at 18000 I-45 South, The Woodlands, Texas 77384. There will be no formal procession to the graveside.
