Dr. Donald Paul Long, a devoted husband, dad, grandfather, and physician, passed away at home surrounded by loved ones at the age of 85, following a courageous journey with cancer. Born on March 23, 1939, in California to Robert Paul and Ruby Louise Long, Don was the second of six siblings. He spent his childhood near the Arrowhead Monument in San Bernardino, where his love for the outdoors and adventure was first kindled.
As a young man, Don embraced the values of service, dedication, and achievement. A proud Eagle Scout, he earned the prestigious Vigil Honor of the Order of the Arrow, the Explorer Silver Award, and the Boy Scout Heroism Award for saving the life of another scout who was drowning. He later served his country in the United States Navy from 1958 to 1962, working aboard the aircraft carrier USS Ranger. After his military service, he devoted two years to a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Texas, deepening his passion for the gospel and his commitment to serving others.
Upon completing his mission, Don returned to Texas to pursue his dream of becoming a physician. Over his distinguished career, he delivered thousands of babies, earning the trust and gratitude of many families in his community. His skill, compassion, and commitment made a lasting impact on all those he served.
Don’s personal life was equally fulfilling. From his first marriage, he was blessed with seven children whom he loved unconditionally. In 1989, he married his love, Sonya McDonald, for time and all eternity. Together, they blended their families with love as Don warmly embraced two stepsons as his own. Later, they welcomed a cherished daughter who completed their family. Don’s posterity includes 30 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren, who affectionately called him “Poppy.” He cherished his family, and their love brought him immense joy.
Don was a man of boundless talents and passions. A gifted photographer, he had an eye for capturing the beauty of nature and the joy of family gatherings, preserving cherished memories with care. Affectionately known as “Dr. Fix It,” Don had a knack for tinkering, sewing, and repairing almost anything, always eager to use his skills to help those around him. His love for good food, especially Tex-Mex, shone through in the delicious meals he prepared for his family, from homemade tacos to freshly baked bread and waffles. An artist at heart, Don had a passion for drawing and a deep appreciation for music, particularly the piano. He inspired his children to explore their talents and pursue their passions, fostering a lifelong love of creativity and self-expression within his family.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, his two brothers, and his sister. He is survived by his loving wife, Sonya, one brother and one sister, as well as his 10 children, 30 grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren who will miss him dearly.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, January 6th, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 15940 Old Conroe Rd, Conroe, TX 77384. A viewing for family will precede the funeral service at 10 A.M., and a family graveside service will occur at a later date at the Houston National Cemetery. There will be a small reception at the church following the funeral service.
Dr. Donald Paul Long’s legacy of faith, service, and love will forever be cherished by his family, friends, and all who were blessed to know him. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Don’s memory may be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Diabetes Association.
