Services for Daphne Marshall will be Friday, July 7, 2023 at Forest Park The Woodlands Funeral located at 18000 Interstate 45 S, The Woodlands, TX 77384. The service will begin at 10:00 a.m. in the Magnolia Room followed by a brief graveside committal ceremony at Forest Park The Woodlands Cemetery.
Daphne Marshall lived a long, rich and varied life. The daughter of Greek immigrants, Daphne was born in the seaside community of Portsmouth, New Hampshire on July 8, 1927. Growing up in what was then a large family, during the Great Depression, with her father running a restaurant and her mother working in a shoe factory, one has to wonder what life was like for young Daphne.
She would grow up to become a beauty queen, winning a local beauty contest. Besides her natural beauty, Daphne was exceptionally outgoing and talkative and possessed what was described as a “bubbly” personality. It was said she had many suitors, eventually meeting former US Army Air Forces Sergeant John (Jack) Marshall. Daphne and Jack would marry and have two sons, John and Peter.
Growing up in Portsmouth, Daphne always loved the ocean and would spend many long afternoons with her family at nearby beaches.
In her later years, her son Peter would move her to Colorado where he lived at the time. She loved her new community and enjoyed long walks through the neighborhood. Then, after Peter and his family moved to The Woodlands, he and his wife, Jane, moved her as well.
Eventually John would also move to The Woodlands, and Daphne and her two sons, her daughter-in law, Jane, and granddaughter Nicole, would all be nearby for the first time in years. “This is the best Easter I’ve ever had,“ she said to John after attending services at St. Anthony the Great Orthodox church in Tomball on Greek Easter in 2017. “You were gone all those years.“ Daphne enjoyed the services at the church, where she was a regular attendee for some time. Daphne also enjoyed her family birthday and holiday celebrations, typically hosted at Pete and Jane’s nearby home.
Besides her family, Daphne also had a lifelong love of dogs. In her younger years the family always had multiple dogs in the house — Spotty, Snoopy, Major and Princess — to name a few. “She was a good dog that Princess,” Daphne said sadly a few years ago, speaking of her beloved dog’s death nearly 40 years earlier. But most likely her favorite dog of all was John’s dog Mookie. When John and Mookie would visit, Daphne would sing to the little dog as he nestled up to her on her couch. Mookie gave her a great deal of comfort and joy in what would turn out to be the last few years of her life.
Daphne will be laid to rest the day before what would have been her 96th birthday.
Besides her immediate family, sons John and Peter Marshall, daughter-in-law Jane Marshall and granddaughter Nicole Marshall, Daphne is survived by her sister, Katherine Coussoule, of Portsmouth, N.H., and niece Suzanne Dargie, her husband David Dargie and their daughter, Daphne's grandniece, Alexa.
Daphne was preceded in death by her brother Peter Coussoule, who passed away earlier this year, and other siblings, Angela Schneider, Kleanthy Coussoule and Demetrius Coussoule, her mother and father, Marie and Louis Coussoule, and her ex-husband, John (Jack) Marshall.
Daphne’s final resting spot is a bucolic setting in the shade of beautiful trees that tower above. It’s a tranquil spot for her to rest in everlasting peace.
