Carl Joseph Battaglia passed away peacefully at home on August 16, 2013, in the presence of his family. He was born on January 9, 1941 in Providence, Rhode Island. He was the beloved son of the late Rose and Charles Battaglia. He grew up in Providence and attended grammar school at St. Pius School. He attended Classical High School in Providence, Rhode Island.
Carl received his undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire graduating with an A.B. (Biology). There he received the First Arthur H. Ruggles Scholar award. He attended Medical School at Tuft’s University School of Medicine in Boston, Massachusetts and was the 1966 Recipient of the Roche Award for “Outstanding Promise as a Physician”. He completed his internship at Barnes Hospital/ Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. He then completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Women’s and Infants Hospital of Rhode Island in Providence.
Carl served in the United States Air Force from 1965-1979. He served in a variety of positions in the continental US and Europe. While serving in San Antonio, Texas, he completed a residency in anesthesiology. He was honorably discharged from the Air Force in 1979 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
From 1979 to 2012, Carl worked at TOPS Surgical Specialty Hospital as Medical Director and Anesthesiologist. He retired from full time medical practice on January 1, 2012.
Carl is survived by his loving wife, Nyla. He is also survived by his children, stepchildren, and grandchildren: son, Carl G Battaglia; daughter, Carla Pulliam; stepson, Adam Walsh; stepdaughter, Erin Jones and grandchildren; Elena Pulliam, Cara Battaglia, Bates Pulliam, Lexi Pulliam, Julia Jones, and Emerson Walsh, all of Texas. His sister, Carole Battaglia, of North Kingstown, Rhode Island, also survives Carl.
