After graduating from Spurger High School, he served our country in the Submarine Reserves and as a paratrooper in the 508th ARCT 82nd Division in Fort Benning, Georgia. While working for Hughes Tool in Houston, Tx he met the love of his life, Marie. They married on October 13, 1951 sharing almost 72 years together. Bob graduated from the University of Houston with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He began a 37-year career with General Electric, which led to one of his career highlights, installation of all the lighting for the new Astro Dome Stadium. After GE, he spent the next ten plus years with O-Z/Gedney and Piedmont Enterprises, he finally retired at the age of 87.
Bob and Marie raised four children in Houston with a brief stay in Normal, Illinois and Kansas City, Kansas. Always focusing on family togetherness, he participated in all his children’s various activities baseball, fishing, dance, cheerleading, scouts and the Catholic Youth Organization.
His five grandchildren and five great grandchildren lovingly refer to him as PaBob. They all enjoyed card games with him, sitting in “PaBob's chair”, all the while sharing a bowl of Blue Bell. PaBob could not resist pulling out the guitar and strumming a song. Usually "You Are My Sunshine".
He loved golfing, fishing, camping, bowling, bridge, dominoes and travel. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and Top Cat Dance Club.
Bob is survived by his wife Marie. His children and spouses: Donna Polansky, Cyndy (Matt) Curry, Mark Fitzgerald and Chris Fitzgerald. And survived by his grandchildren and spouses: Andrew (April) Curry, Alex (Jessica) Curry, Megan Polansky (Taylor) McNeely, Anna and Cooper Fitzgerald, and his great grandchildren: Kirby, Keely, Kesly Curry, Asher McNeely, Riley Curry and Olive Curry (due 1/2024). Along with several nieces, and nephews that loved him dearly.
His sisters and spouses also survived by him: Quida (Howard) Payne, and Debbie Hatton, and sisters and brothers-in-law: Bob and Etta Litzman and Lucille Litzman.
Bob is preceded in death by his parents, Bronson and Vernie Fitzgerald and his parents-in-law Henry and Alma Litzman. Brothers and sisters and spouses: Johnnie Ruth (Gus) Dunbar, WD (Veda) Fitzgerald, Faye (David) Doming, (Garnet Hatton). Brothers and sisters-in-law: H.J. and Lil Litzman, LaVerne and Jerome Schiller, Jim and Joy Litzman.
A visitation will be held Sunday afternoon, August 20, 2023 from 2:00 - 4:00 pm with eulogies at 3:00 pm, rosary at 3:30 pm at Forest Park The Woodlands Funeral Home located at 18000 Interstate 45 South, The Woodlands, TX 77384.
A Funeral Mass will be Monday, August 21, 2023 at 10:00 am at Sts. Simon and Jude Catholic Parish located at 26777 Glen Loch Dr, The Woodlands, TX 77381 followed by a reception at 11:00 am. Interment will be at the Houston National Cemetery, 10410 Veterans Memorial Dr., Houston, TX 77038, at 1:45 pm, with a police escort provided from the church to the cemetery at 12:30 pm.
