Betty Wolford was born Betty Lou Bugg on January 3, 1934, to Carson and Martha Bugg in Plant City, Florida. She attended Henry Plant High School and attended the University of Florida where she was a member of Alpha Delta Pi. She then moved to New Orleans, Louisiana to pursue a degree in Nursing.
While in nursing school, friends set her up on a blind date with Charles “Charlie” Wolford, currently a junior at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Six months later, the two were married and she followed him to Baton Rouge so he could complete his education. This was one of many moves she and Charlie would make after he joined “Esso” now Exxon Mobil.
Over the years, Betty would work in a family business and as a realtor, but her greatest joy was being the mother to her three sons, Steve, Scott, and Kent. An athletic beauty, she had a passion for tennis and played until she was in her late seventies. Betty was also a regular playmate to her boys, practicing their baseball or any other sport they were playing at the time.
Betty had a love for the water. She loved spending time at their second home in Galveston and spending time at the lake at their primary home in Walden where she would spend hours fishing alongside her children and grandchildren, boating, or simply swinging on her favorite back porch swing enjoying the lake view and inspiring sunsets.
Not only was Betty a competitive tennis player, spending many fulfilling years playing in leagues in California, Maryland, and Texas, she was an avid card player and taught many card games to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. When she and Charlie moved to The Woodlands, she played bridge regularly with her neighbors in their Windsor Hills community.
Betty had a contagious laugh, bright blue eyes, and a competitive, but playful spirit. She did not back down from a challenge, and she was usually the first pick for games with kids and grandkids in games ranging from tennis to corn hole to ping pong and pool.
After a vibrant, active life, Betty waged a brief battle with lung cancer and passed away four months after her diagnosis.
Betty is survived by her husband of 69 years, Charles J. Wolford, and her sons Steve Wolford (wife Amy) and Kent Wolford (wife Ann). Their son Scott Wolford (wife Kathie) pre-deceased her in death in June of 2020 after a courageous fight against glioblastoma.
Betty’s legacy lives on in her children and grandchildren – Jeffrey Wolford (husband Scott), Kristin Bullard (husband Sam), Melanie Mazorra (husband Juan Carlos), Tyler Wolford (wife Lauren), Brooke Wolford, step-grandsons Ian and Nate Wellman, grandsons Todd Wolford (wife Kim), and Brian Wolford (wife Kelley). One of Betty’s greatest joys was spending time with her eleven great-grandchildren.
Betty is preceded in death by her father and mother – Carson and Martha Bugg, her stepmother Gladys Bugg, her brother Jimmy Bugg and her beloved son Scott Wolford.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, July 23rd at the East Shore Club located at 2662 N. Bay Place in The Woodlands, Texas from 11 AM to 1:30 PM.
