Arthur "Sugar" Wellington Bowers Jr., a dedicated father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother, peacefully went to be with our Lord on Thursday, May 25, 2023, in The Woodlands, TX, surrounded by his beloved family. He was 81 years old.
He was born to Arthur H. Bowers Sr. and Aileen Dunlap Bowers on October 5, 1941, in Springfield, TN. Arthur attended the Davidson County School System and graduated from Cameron High School in 1960. He received a Bachelor’s in Applied Science from Central Texas College in 1986.
Arthur honorably retired as a Sergeant First Class from the U.S. Army in 1976. While serving, he was stationed in Alabama, Alaska, Germany, and Fort Hood, TX. He proudly served 2 tours in Vietnam. He earned many medals to include; the National Defense, Vietnam Service Medal with 2 bronze stars, Joint Service Commendation Medal, and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal w/60 Device, 2 Overseas Service Bars, and Good Conduct Medal w/4 clasp. He continued his career as a civilian while working on Fort Hood Army Base until his retirement.
Arthur was a mild-mannered man who exuded his love by being selfless and giving. He was noted to sometimes hold 2 jobs to provide for his family, ensuring his boys were able to participate in their love of sports. He also had a passion for mechanical and electrical work and at a young age, would fix radios. Through the years, Arthur enjoyed working on cars and teaching his boys as well. He enjoyed playing pool, dominoes, watching football, and was a fan of the Seattle Seahawks. Arthur loved listening to the sounds of his favorite bands which included: The Temptations, Sam Cooke, The Manhattans, Lionel Richie, Percy Sledge and many others, through his extensive cassette collection. He also enjoyed James Bond, Westerns, and Denzel Washington movies. Arthur had a passion for history and was excited to witness the first Black president being placed into office. He bought and proudly displayed the book documenting Obama's biography & historic presidency.
Arthur loved all types of sweets, hence his nickname,” Sugar”, which was given to him as a young boy. Arthur had a relationship with Jesus and claimed Him as his Lord and Savior and will be enjoying all the sweets imaginable in heaven. He enjoyed reading The Bible and cherished his bible study with his sister, Joan. He was very interested in the lives of his grandchildren and cherished his time with his family.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Arthur H. Bowers, Sr. and Aileen Dunlap Bowers; his beloved wife, Edna; siblings Ruby Jean, Donald, Thurman, Robert Sr., Charles, and Tyree Bowers.
He leaves to cherish and honor his memory, four sons, Arthur W. Bowers, III (Luz) of Austin, TX, Danny Bowers of Austin TX, Rodger E. Bowers (Angela) of Huntsville, TX, Sean Bowers (Autry) of Richmond, TX; 8 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; brothers Jerry Bowers and Jerome Bowers of Nashville, TN; sisters Mary (Ralph) Armstrong, Shirley Ann Stallworth, Joan (John) Baker, Ruth Epperson, and Constance Morris, all of Nashville, TN; a host of beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A visitation for Arthur will be held Monday, June 5, 2023, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Forest Park; The Woodlands Funeral Home & Cemetery, 18000 Interstate 45 S, The Woodlands, TX 77384. A “Celebration of Life” and funeral service will occur Tuesday, June 6, 2023, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, 18000 Interstate 45 S, The Woodlands, TX 77384. A burial will occur Tuesday, June 6, 2023, from 12:45 PM to 1:00 PM at Houston National Cemetery, 10410 Veterans Memorial Dr, Houston, TX 77038. Flowers can be sent to Forest Park; The Woodlands Funeral Home for his Celebration of Life, addressed to the Bowers family. Thereafter, or in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital; a charity Arthur generously and lovingly supported.
