He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Shirley (Breithaupt) Sowders; his daughter, Alita Gable Carter and her husband Ron Carter; his daughter, Apryl Evans; his grandchildren, Travis Gable, Erin Evans Helm, Jared Gable, Alan Gable and Trey Evans; eleven great grandchildren; and many friends.
Born and raised in Houston, the son of Edward Armstrong Sowders and Eloise Atkinson Sowders. He is survived by one brother, Robert Sowders. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Marilyn Lowe; and brother Don Sowders.
He graduated from High School in 1949 and served in the Naval Reserves from 1949 to 1953. He met his wife as a teen in church at Lindale Church of Christ and they were married on December 14, 1951.
He graduated from North Texas State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology in 1967 and earned a Master’s degree in Counseling from East Texas State University
Serving God as a Minister for the church of Christ has been his primary life’s work. He has served at churches in Hull Diasetta, Texas; Plano, Texas; Sitka, Alaska; and Grapeland, Texas. He also served as an administrator and house parent in Christian Child Care at Boles Home Children’s Home in Quinlan, Texas from 1953-1962 and then again from 19701-1991 as Superintendent.
Mr. Sowders expressed himself in many different artistic talents. He was especially gifted in oil painting, woodcarving, and dulcimer playing. He was a man of strong devotion to His Lord and His Lord’s Church, fatherless children, his wife and his family.
A memorial Service will be held on April 2, 2016 at Grace Crossing Community Church of Christ in the Woodlands, Texas with private burial
