Alan May was born on November 15, 1930 to Newton Emmet May and Iris Houston May in Honolulu, Hawaii, He passed away peacefully at home on February 24, 2021 at the age of 90 from a long illness of Congestive Heart Failure.
Alan is survived by his daughter Lorrie Gazette and her husband Mark, son John May, daughter Kini Philpot, stepchildren, Cindy Schroppel and her husband Joe, Paul Sarver and his wife Jacci Kilgore, sister Geraldine Stamps and her husband Larry, brother Richard Neville and his wife Debbie. He has 11 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Newton and Iris May, wife Jean Reeb May to whom he was married for 17 years, sister Kathleen Rizzo, grandson Christopher Hutchins, and stepson, Daniel Sarver.
Al was raised in Honolulu, Hawaii for most of his childhood until he joined the Navy at the age of 17. He served our country well for 20 Years in the US Navy, retiring as the Master Diver of the Experimental Diving Unit in Washington, DC. He also served 5 years as Operational Manager at Makai Undersea Test Range in Hawaii, followed by several management positions for various diving companies throughout the world.
Some of Alan’s proudest accomplishments were his 15 years serving with Walk to Emmaus ministry in Florida. He also served faithfully for 25 years with the Kairos Prison Ministry in Florida and Texas, and 5 years as a Volunteer Chaplain at Glades Correctional Institution in Belle Glade, FL. Along with his wife Jean, Al served 3 years as Stephen’s Minister at Lanes Chapel Methodist Church in Tyler, TX.
Al loved talking to people and sharing his relationship with Jesus Christ. It was important to him that others understood the value of having a personal relationship with his Lord and Savior. He led many men to salvation as a Chaplain and through the Kairos prison ministry.
Al and his wife attended church at The Church at 242 in Conroe after moving to Houston for the past 3 years. While living in the East Texas area, they attended church at First Baptist Church in Flint, TX, and Lanes Chapel Methodist prior to that.
Al loved spoiling his dogs, Rascal and Cammie. He enjoyed passing the time sitting in his overstuffed chair out in the garage while reading books, talking to neighbors and soaking up the sun. Al was an accomplished cook and enjoyed grilling and smoking meats for his family and friends. He and Jean traveled throughout the US in their RV, enjoying nature and the sights.
Alan’s memorial service will be held Saturday, March 20th at 11:00 a.m. at The Church at 242 located at 9268 State Highway 242, Conroe, TX 77385.
