Ellis Quinn Youngkin, 78, passed peacefully from this life on January 31, 2018 surrounded by her loving family near her home in The Villages, FL. Ellis lived a truly wonderful life, filled with service to others, devotion to her family, love of teaching, and true dedication to friends.
Born in 1939 in Durham, N.C., Dr. Youngkin was a graduate of Duke University (BSN), the University of Maryland (MS), the Medical College of Virginia at VCU (Nurse Practitioner), and Old Dominion University (PhD). She practiced and taught her beloved nursing profession at Church Home and Hospital School of Nursing (Baltimore, MD), the VCU School of Nursing (Richmond, VA), the Department of Nursing at ODU School of Allied Health (Norfolk, VA), and the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing at Florida Atlantic University (Boca Raton, FL). Her 46-year career included administration, clinical research, certified nursing and, prior to her 2007 retirement, Associate Dean over all graduate academic programs at ,Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing, Florida Atlantic University.
Dr. Youngkin’s colleagues, students and patients frequently recognized her contributions. She was the sole nursing member on the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology’s national committee, was named National Nurse Practitioner of the Year, and served as President of the Board for Pinecrest Rehabilitation Hospital. She and co-authors wrote several primary care nurse practitioner textbooks, as well as clinical and scientific journal articles. Dr. Youngkin found deep joy in teaching, treating, and mentoring.
"Noni" cherished being with her beloved husband, family and dear friends. Her caring and compassionate nature was a gift to all who knew her. She and Yunk resided happily in The Villages for 11 years. Ellis enjoyed painting, music, writing, reading, playing games/cards, golf, and volunteering in her community. Retirement provided Ellis with an opportunity to paint, a particular passion, and she exhibited her works in The Virginia Museum, the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Nursing, the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing at Florida Atlantic University, and in local art stores and shows.
Dr. Youngkin is survived by her husband of 58 years, Carroll Wayne Youngkin, their daughter, Dorothy Marian Youngkin Kouba (Chris) of Chesapeake, VA, their son, Glenn Allen Youngkin (Suzanne) of Great Falls, VA, their niece, Lynn Delp Cribb (Paul) of Winston-Salem, NC, and their seven grandchildren: Valarie Quinn Kouba; Emily Rose Kouba; Julianne Elizabeth Kouba; Grant McDaniel Youngkin; Anna Elizabeth Youngkin; John Ellis Youngkin; and Thomas Glenn Youngkin. Ellis will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered, by her family and many friends.
A Celebration of Life service for Ellis will be held on February 17 in the Villages, FL.
