Former New York State resident, Julia E. Witman, 98, died September 1, 2019 in Texarkana, Texas. Julia was born on April 3, 1921 in Schenectady, NY to Jacob and Adela (Ogonowski) Winarski. After graduating from high school and successfully completing a year of post-secondary education, she worked as a secretary for General Electric during World War II. That’s when she met her husband, Charles J. Witman. They soon married on November 11, 1945. With the impending birth of their first child, she became a homemaker. As their children began kindergarten, she became very involved in the parent teacher association of Glendaal Elementary School, Scotia, NY. She was an exceptionally active member of the Women’s Auxillary of the Glenville Hill Volunteer Fire Department, Glenville, NY. Throughout her life, Julia enjoyed baking lots of cheesecakes and cookies for friends and family; sewing clothing, doll clothes, and curtains; refinishing antique furniture; caring for her vegetable, herb, and flower gardens; reading mystery and adventure novels; and, feeding songbirds. Julia (aka, Mimi) had a very special relationship with her grandson with whom she shared many hilarious moments and mischievous adventures. She was predeceased by her husband, Charles, of 47 years, and by her two brothers, Vincent Jastrebski and John Winarski. She loved her children David (and Mary J), Sandra Labby, and James, and her grandson, Jonathan, and friends old and new. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Julia’s name to Hospice of Texarkana, 2407 Galleria Oaks Drive, Texarkana, TX 75503. A celebration of life service will be held on Friday, September 6, 2019 at 4:00pm at East Funeral Home, 2807 Moores Lane, Texarkana, Texas 75503 with Rev. Michael Adams officiating.
