William Richard Coons

William R. (Billy) Coons passed away on Friday July 21st, 2017. He was born February 17th, 1942 to the late William Harvey Coons and Grace Anderson Coons Humphrey. He married Elizabeth (Liz) Machango Coons on September 6th, 1969 in Terre Haute at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and she survives.

Billy was a retired Captain of the City of Terre Haute Fire Department, with 33 years of faithful service. He was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, B.O.W., and Murdock Racing Club. Billy was a former CYO football coach at St. Margaret Mary’s Catholic, and was a former member of the Knights of Columbus.

Also surviving are his son Rodd Coons of Terre Haute and daughter Andrea (Mike) Moeller of Terre Haute; three grandchildren Caleb Coons of Rosedale, Liam and Addeline Moeller of Terre Haute; sister- in- law, Julie Machango of Martinsville, Illinois; brothers- in- law, Kim Machango of Metcalf, Illinois and Michael (Tammie) Machango of Ellettsville, Indiana; several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Gloria Humphrey; a brother, Ronald Humphrey; a niece, Jessica Summer Stott; and a nephew, Eric Humphrey.

Billy enjoyed putting in a garden each spring, canning tomatoes fresh from his garden and making tomato juice. He loved being outside with his dog Rascal. Rascal also enjoyed it because Billy was always feeding him his favorite treat, peanut butter pretzels.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, July 25, 2017 at 11 AM, at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church. Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Marshall. Illinois. The family will receive friends on Monday, July 24, 2017 from 4 – 8 P.M. at Mattox – Wood Funeral Home.
