Aunt Virginia was an inspiration all her life.  As youngster I had the great fortune to be a frequent overnight guest in her home; a welcoming place to all.  Her constant, witty patter wove through a riot of kids, grandkids, friends and family. She was fascinating with her fluent Spanish, and stories of places far from the comfort and safety of Terre Haute.  Through her,  I saw boundaries fall.  In my early teens, it was Aunt Virginia playing escort on  my first trip far off, to Washington D.C.  She took Kenny, Randy and me to the Nation's Capitol of course--so like her!  My memories of the Lincoln Memorial, the Potomac, the Cherry Trees bursting into pink bloom,  climbing the stairs to the top of the Washington Monument,  the sense of  the sheer size and importance of our country...all that was courtesy of aunt Virginia.   In her later years she barely slowed,  and could be found traveling to family weddings etc, in far flung states. And so she came to Los Angeles, where she met my wife, Lynn, and the two became a mutual adoration society.  Virginia let me know in no uncertain terms, that I was beyond lucky, and to always appreciate it.   Lynn,  as fascinated by Virginia as everyone else, bugged me last year to visit her. To my regret and sorrow, I  put it off.   When I called her, we could talk all day--same as ever when it came to gabbing.  I will forever miss Virginia--my first muse, the one who made the concept of becoming a writer in Hollywood not a fantasy, but an achievable goal--and it has made all the difference.    Thank you, aunt Virginia,  for your sense of adventure,  steadfastness,  curiosity, smarts, loving heart, snappy wit, true grit, and sense of humor--and most of all, for pointing the way.  In your memory and our deeds, you continue to inspire.

I learned just today of the death of Virginia.  I enjoyed working with her very much and appreciated her concern for and help in caring for patients that we shared both at St Anthony Hospital and in my office.  My thoughts are with all of the family at this time.

I became friends with Virginia when I joined Washington Ave. PC in the late 1980's.  When she no longer was able to attend church services, I was one of the Elders who accompanied Pastor Linda when we took communion to Virginia.  We were always greeted with that wonderful smile and great hospitality.  We spend our time on her sunny back porch, enjoying her back yard and a lovely cup of tea.  Even in her last years, when we visited Virginia, we were greeted with her wonderful smile.  I will miss that most of all.

Dear Howard Family and other loved ones,

We are sending our deepest sympathy to all. Those that new Aunt Virginia was truly blessed by her. She had such love for life. I was her neighbor when she lived in North Terre Haute and we developed a beautiful friendship. Her & I spent many a day on her sun porch having tea. We also shared a lot of our enjoyment of gardening, she taught me so much. We will miss her but she is in a better place and she loved the Lord. We will not be attending the visitation and service due to other engagement but we are with you in your sorrow.
