Melvin Ancil Andrew, 86, of Terre Haute, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Sunday, January 8, 2023 at Westminster Village. He was born on July 7, 1936, at home in Catlin, Parke County, Indiana to Aaron Ancil and Eppie Marie (Penrod) Andrew. He married his high school sweetheart, Thelma Ruth Milligan on November 25, 1956.
Melvin is survived by his wife of 66 years, Thelma Andrew of Terre Haute; daughter, Karen Durr and husband, Gregg, of Terre Haute; grandchildren, Robert Nicholas Durr and wife, Kaitland, of Terre Haute; Adrian Matthew Durr and wife, Jessica, of Palmer, AK; and Emily Lynne Durr and fiancé, Christopher Clapp of Terre Haute; great-grandchildren, Chad Maxwell Durr and Harleigh Jade Durr; brothers, Raymond Andrew and wife, Ann, of Gainesville, FL; and Glenn Andrew and wife, Carol, of Lebanon; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
A 1954 graduate of Bridgeton High School, Melvin enlisted in the Indiana Air National Guard after graduation. He served for a short time and then began working as a civilian on the base for nearly fifteen years. He worked the remainder of his career as a service manager for Freitag-Weinhardt and Gibson Services.
Melvin was the calm in the storm and as steady as a rock. Blessed with eternal patience and always gracious, Melvin impacted lives without saying as much as even a word. His lawn was his hobby and not a blade of grass was out of place. Melvin understood the importance of taking care of things to make them last, not only material items, but people and relationships as well. Melvin devoted time daily to his relationship with the Lord and was a lifelong member of Bridgeton United Methodist Church. He loved life and loved his family. He was a devoted husband, wonderful dad, and doting grandfather. His family was his greatest accomplishment. He rests in Heaven, knowing that he is loved.
Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 14 at Mattox-Wood Funeral Home. A funeral ceremony will begin following the visitation on Saturday, at the funeral home, with Pastor Linda Smock officiating. Melvin will be laid to rest in Roselawn Memorial Park with military honors provided by VFW Post 972. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.mattoxwood.com
